Trying to remove alternator. Any tips or tricks? I removed the 3 bolts holding it, but it don't budge. Obviously one or more need to be removed, but not sure which ones. Any ideas? Pics would be great if you have them.... |

mounting bolt and 2 horizontal mounting bolts That's what the FSM states, only 3 bolts, the alt may be slightly fused to the mounts, use a prybar to help break it lose. |

Aliminum housing here and don't wan to screw up the mount. Are you changing it out? is this a CORE alt/gen? If it is a ribber mallet can help out too. Just be careful. |

I did get it to move, but the belt is applying a lot of pressure, so no room to remove it. I wondering if there is another bolt to help release some of the tension on the belt. Maybe this is best left for my mechanic so I don't ruin something. I replaced the battery about 2 weeks ago, now this one is dead so I'm figuring alternator. Thanks for the help. |

You cannot take the alternator out with the belt still on. Take the belt off first. Here is how you remove the belt: http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34385 |

Yeah the serp belt needs to come off first, and make sure the battery is disconnected.Kinda thought that was self explanitory, guess not.
Thanks for the help. |

One MAJOR point to bring up: When releasing the tensioner pully, BE VERY CAREFUL!! AND DO NOT LET THE TENSION SPRING RELEASE SHARPLY. This spring pully will snap loose it you are not ready for it's tension. You can really screw it up if it snaps back real fast. |

No problem. If it had you would have been in deeper troubles. I would seriously recomend a copy of the factory service mannual. All of this and MUCH more is outlined in detail. A good read before you attempt anything is a great place to start. Worth EVERY penny. In this case I think you would come out ahead not only in time but in potential expense. And not the Chilton's or others mannuals. Get the Chrysler FSM. |
