Did you submerge the transmission recently? Is the fluid red and clean?

What type of fluid did you add? Did you check it while it was in N?

When was the last time the fluid was changed?

Mine situation is similar...My transmission bucks, but only shifting from 2nd to 3rd. I have the fluid changed by the dealer at ~25K. It also only does it a around 1/4 throttle. Full throttle is fine. I have 53K on it now. I just cleaned the K&N. Will a PCM re-flash work?

Please help...I don't want to take it to the dealer.

Submerge? I don't know that I'm familiar with this... but, yes, the fluid on the dipstick was red/clear before I added more fluid.

Submerge as in take your KJ into a big hole full of water down at Badlands :D Extending your transmission/diff and tcase breathers is a must do project to keep water out of these area's

Doesn't sound like this is the issue though.

Was your Liberty all warmed up when this happened?? I know mine won't shift into overdrive until its warmed up. Sometimes does the downshift dance until it is good and warm.

I checked it while in park.

I had the tranny serviced about a year ago - I'll have to go look at that receipt. What's the recommended mileage between each tranny service? I've driven approx 25K since then... Hmmm. Maybe I should look into that first.

Owners manual calls for it every 60k but if you offorad or tow every 30k is best.

Only use ATF+4 tranny fluid and check the tranny in N.
