I went to put on my new Rancho shocks last night and the mounting points were not as wide as the OEM shocks. So there was free motion about 1/4" back and forth even with the bolts tightened down.

So I rounded up a lock washer and a regular washer for each side and used them to take up the space, and then tightened everything down real good. No motion now. Everything is REAL tight.

Question is.. will it stay tight the way I did it? And is it supposed to be tight? Should the shock mount be able to move some for flexing off road??

if they are the same ranchos that are supplied with the rusty's lift, the upper eyelet is too narrow and you will have to use a spacer. with a spacer they seem to work loose on some people after awhile. just keep an eye on them and retighten if needed.

you are correct though, they should be tight with zero play

should be no play at all if you have to bend in the brackets it'll be ok I've changed shocks on my trucks (before the kj) & it seemed all the aftermarket shocks never seemed to fit tight always had to bend the brackets in ,just keep tightening till there's no play

I have noticed that Rusty's doesn't always ship the required spacer for the shocks. Call them and they will send you the spacer for free. If you can't wait just fill the gap with some washers. That is what I did and it has been great for over a year now.

Lcok washers that are cut and have that bend in them could start to tear up the rubber grommet (or whatever it is called), if you have it next to it. Not sure how you rigged it.

I had the same problem on my wife's 05 Rengade but was worried about just tightening until the bracekt bent since the upper bolt goes into the body. I didn't want to run the risk of stripping the nut out and then not being able to unstall a bolt at all.

I used washers and everything tightened up fine. Hasn't loosened up on me at all so far.
