Actually, I do most of the work on all of my cars including the restoration of my Road Runner. Trouble lately is with an average of 107hr workweek and 5 year old daughter, it leaves little time to wrench. You are right, 1/2 the fun of this stuff is doing it yourself and I do usually have my daughter help - and she is very good with an impact wrench and torque wrench now - just not enough time before hunting season begins.

Paul, where are you from? The Elias I know is in Townsend. If this is that same one, I work at Devens and live in Gardner. We should hook up some time. When are you taking your liberty to Elias for the install? I can't remember the guys name that owns the place but, he is very knowledgeable and a good guy.

Yup that's the place and Lou is the guy. Dropped it off yesterday and should have it back on Friday.Great guy and a dog person too (like me).
Let's get together when I get the Lib back. If you know some easy trails (I am a complete novice at that), I'd give them a shot.

You'll be impressed. Remember to modulate the emergency brake "IF" you need to lock the rear up.

Before you go, find your resistance point. With it in drive and your feet off the brake. find out how many clicks of the e-brake to slow you down...not stop you.

Rear too huh? I have this locker in the front of my discovery and while I can see the use in the front I really hate it because you do have to lock the brakes in order for it to lock.

I would really suggest getting a full locker in the rear if you plan to wheel, you will get really annoyed.

That's right, Lou is the guy. I remember the dog he has. If you don't mind me asking, what is he charging for the install in the front? I installed my own powertrax no-slip in the rear. Very easy to do. But, the front is another story. I hear you have to take the front diff all the way out. I will be out in that area tonight after work. Maybe I will stop by there to check out how he's doing and check out your libby, if you don't mind.

Bella Luna is the Rotty that greeted me at the door. She was a sweetheart and loved to play.

$900 for both the front and rear. Didn't break it down as to how much for each.

Let me know what you find if you swing by Lou.

I thought about a Powertrax for the rear, but was concerned about it's behavior on ice here in RI. I read just about every thread and it seemed as if it would not be too much of a problem, but in the end, I went this route.

Ok - any lock is better than being not lock anyhow 8)

here's a tip: instead of "tapping" the brakes just push them down a bit and give it some gas, this will lock them up every time.

Thanks, will do. Similar to "heel-toe" technique on the race track. Now the question is "Should I put MTRs back on?"

I wouldn't put MTR's on if you are worried about the snow and ice in RI. I had them on for a winter here and on the road, they weren't the best. It had nothing to do with the powertrax, it was up front in the steering. But, when I put my AT's back on, what a difference. You will be better off, leaving on your Revo's for the winter.
By the way, I stopped by Elias tonight and your libby was on the lift and the front diff was out and Lou said that they were about ready to put it back in and do the back tomorrow. Nice Libby by the way.

the front is easy to pull out, just a pain to put back and ensure all is lined up... to minimize vibrations... Other than the shafts and driveline removal, it is only 4 bolts to drop the front diff.

As for mtr's vs AT's...go with AT's for winter, I have already slid once last weekend with just a dusting, gonna put my AT's back on for the winter...
weird, this is going to be my first winter season in the states in 2 years... :twisted:

I had MTRs last year and I have to agree, not the best on ice (or even light rain when the grease and grit on the road hasn't washed off yet). I ahven't had the Revo's in the snow so I don't have a good comparison.

Woohoo, maybe I'll have it back by Thursday (not counting on that, but it would save me a day of car rental).

Sounds good to me. Have to remind you and anyone else that might go, I have very limited experience wheelin'. I ahve been off-road on fireroads and cut-throughs in the Catskill mountains - mud bogs. rocks/boulders etc. but nothing like some of the pictures I ahve seen posted here.

Would love to try it, though.

Not a problem. Like I said, I was in the area anyway. You will have to let me know what you think about the true trac and how it operates for you, especially having it in the front as well. I have heard that it's not noticeable until you engage 4wd. But, I guess that you will soon find out.

and drove the 80 miles back to providence.
First impressions:
1)in 2WD, steering feels "heavier" than before, but not that much different, but different nonetheless
2) In full-time 4WD - much heavier as if it were a front-wheel drive car withthe usual torque steer

I have not tried PT 4WD nor have I had it off road yet - that will be next weekend.

All in all, Lou was great to deal with and certainly seemed to know his stuff.
