lol...yeah...no owners manual and the oil cap is blank.
I was going to download the owners manual but every site I go to wants like $75!!! Insane.

Call me stupid but I am having the hardest time remembering what types of oil I am supposed to use in my Liberty. I always use Valvoline and Full Synthetic if possible. I am pretty sure 5w30 is what I use for the engine but the Trans, Diffs and transfer case completely escape me. I think it was Type 4 or something for the diffs and T-case. Either way I would like to be absolutely sure and any advice on oil type would greatly help me. Thanks guys. |

You are not stupid but It should say right on your oil cap and/or owners manual what your KJ takes. But in case you don't have an owners manual or oil cap..... 5w30 for your engine. ATF+4 for your trans and transfer case. 75w90 - 75w140 for diffs. Your choice based on the kind of driving you do or if you tow. (I love the 75w110 Amsoil since it is right in the middle and I use it in all my Jeeps diffs) |

Starting with the 2007 KJ's, there was a switch to 5W-20 for the engine oil. Before then, it is 5W-30 I run 75W-140 in my Diff's all year round... Especially the front since it's constantly turning. |

Yeah I need to change everything and add some power steering fluid as well. I have a grinding noise from the front when I make turns at speed or hard turns. Cant tell if its the diff or the power steering though...or if it is something else in the axle...ugh... |

In what sense? The switch was mainly to achieve the same MPG ratings under the new CAFE calculations. The lower warm temperature weight is great for colder weather driving, but if I was in a hotter part of the country, I might be concerend with accelerated heat breakdown of the dino based oil. |

Very nice list there JeepJeepster. Thank you. Although I disagree with the service chart. I never change every 3k miles. Not with full synthetic. I do it every 5k and it can go as long as 10k with no issues. Or so I am told. |

Well there goes that concern! The 5W-20 would supply bettter mileage. I think I would use it, but only if my KJ came from the factory with it. |

(Haven't made my intro thread yet) I recently bought an 04 libby from carmax and it didn't have an owners manual, they gave me this number 1-800-890-4038 and I got a brand new owners manual for $25 including shipping. (And carmax is going to give me a refund too!) Hope this helps. |

Don't know if this is an '02-manual-only thing or what, but that's what she says:P |

I usually use 5w30 year round. But last oil change I decided to try 10w30. Haven't really noticed any mpg or performance changes. I think I'll stick with 5w30 because Michigan winters are cold and long. Doesn't stop snowing until early march. Summer it rarely reaches 80F. |

My new JK specs 5W20 as well. The consensus over at bobistheoilguy.com is that the 5w20 and 0w20 oils currently available are VERY good. I think they use a better base stock. The opinion seems to be that you'll get better gas mileage, better startup protection, and at least as good protection once warmed up as you'd get from a 5W30. I think the used oil analysis are showing that the 5w30s are actually thinner than the 5w20 (and 0w20s) due to shearing at the end of an oil change interval. So originally I was going to run 5w30 in the JK, but after doing a research I'll probably stick with Chryslers 5w20 recommendation. I might even run 0w20 in the winter. |

Realy isn't necessary to run a thicker oil. Your engine still operates within the same temp ranges if the cooling system is operating correctly. It isn't like it overheats in the Summer just because the air temp is higher (or at least shouldn't if cooling system is working) If you are running a Full synthetic of a lower viscosity it will be fine. There are people running 0w oils in higher heat areas w/ no problems. |

lol...it didnt hit me till just now that I don't have a front diff...is there anything up front I need to change oil in at all? Or is it just the rear diff, trans, motor and t-case? Well...zerk points too...speaking of which...does anybody have a site that has a list or map of all the zerks on this thing? Would like to hit them all and not miss any. |
