As some of you know, I am hopelessly stuck between a manufacturer who offers a locker for the 8.25 29 spline and a trasmission guy who swears on a stack of bibles that it will not fit.
The tranny guy has had my locker on his desk for about a week. He's got all the part on his desk and still insists that the only way this thing is going to fit is to grind on some parts and he will not do that kind of work.

To my question, is the rear known as anything else besides chrysler 8.25? The Tranny guy keeps asking me if I have a Dana 35 back there and wants it to be called something Dana. He's worked on tons of Jeeps, but I have a feeling that this is his first encounter with a Liberty locker install. I keep telling him I've only heard it referred to as 8.25.

Some early '02 KJ's came with a D35 but that axle was soon phased out.Your '06 has the Chrysler 8.25.Can't understand why it won't fit, there are a few on thos board that already have a Detriot installed in the 8.25.Though they list the axle shafts themselfs as being different starting in '06.Maybe the locker you have is wrong, the box may say the correct part# but is he 100% sure the actual locker is the correct one for the 8.25,maybe it's for the 27-spline 8.25 or was boxed wrong.

Only a few Liberty's came with the Dana, 4 cylinders mostly.

Pretty much all of the rest have the Corp 8.25.

Here is how to tell.
The Dana is oval in shape and is found on 02-03 models + foreign exports

The Chrysler 8.25 is flat on the bottom

He's going on the assumption that the locker is boxed wrong. At this point, the problem is he runs a very busy shop and he's not the one who sold this to me. The guys at 4WP says all you have to do is call Eaton with the locker in hand and a caliper to take some measurements. You can have this resolved as to if the part is wrong or not in a few mins.
Of course, I can't make him do that, so they told me to bring them the part and they will do this. I don't think I will have a locker by East Coast Safari.

He's a frustrated fast-talker, but he seems to keep bringing up C clips. He told me he bought new ones and they will not fit. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have never started this and been happy with how far ESP has taken me.

If you were following the thread on the aussie locker, the manufacturer discovered an issue on the 8.25, Something about axle shaft size wasn't consistent in different years.

I have my stock rear axles in a box and could take measurements if you'd like so you can compare them to yours. I replaced mine with Yukon axles when I had the ARB installed.

I was the one who posted the fact the part numbers were different. A member of my Jeep club owns a dealership and I asked him to call Chrysler to find out why the part number changed. He is a busy fast talker as well and he let me know that the C clips are the same part number.......which I already knew.

Based upon what I have run into, I don't recommend anyone with an 06 or 07 KJ to bother with a locker until the aftermarket becomes aware of the change. My guess is it has something to do with the toner ring for ESP causing the spacing to be different, but what the heck do I know? It sucks being caught between two expert pee streams. I don't recommend it.

If I can't get my money back, I will have a deal for anyone interested in a locker.

Wonder if the 05 axle shafts can be used in an 06, if they can, I'll make you a deal.

The same shadey dude from CO I bought my front diff from made a similar offer with an ARB. At this point I am so gun shy, especially with $600 tied up in limbo, I don't even want to think about it. I should have used the cash for another set of rims and mud tires.

I think he was offering the entire axle, I'm just offering the shafts themselves, the c clips fit over the end of the shafts and the brake disks mount to the other end. I think new stock axle shafts run $70, I can hook you up for the shipping costs and a couple of six packs of my favorite beverage. :D

Don't know if they will solve your problem, but I'd hate for you to miss the safari.

JL, why don't you go with an ARB locker?

bugnout

I am not going to miss the safari, my Jeep in in my possesion and running fine with my new 4.10 gears and DTT up front. I was hoping to be locked to I could be a super stud on the trails in Wind Rock. 8)

Diesel

If the problem lies in the axle for 2006 up, I should run into the same road block no matter what the brand. With my luck, they would have drilled the hole and then dicovered the c clips would not go back on! Time will tell, but right now, everyone is right. I have clowns to the left of me and jokers to the right...

This is not the answer I wanted to hear! I have a 07, so technically speaking, I'm in your same boat. :? I'll call ARB and see if they have sold or fitted their air locker on a 06/07 model. surely someone has.

Has he tried to put the locker in? With a Dana 35 and a D44 my friend and I had to do a bit of grinding on the case to get the locker in place. The d35 was a very tight fit and needed a decent amount of clearancing. The D44 needed very little. Other option is to use a case spreader. I have never installed a 8.25 locker, so not sure what needs to be grinded.

The 8.25 does not use shims,it uses adjusting rings on the carrier bearing so no need for a case spreader.

The ARB website www.arbusa.com is down, does anyone have a phone number that I can call? I will try to contact ARBSETH on the forum and see if he knows anything.

See this thread for the resolution: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=34619

I think I've used enough bandwith on my locker drama at this time.

To the best of my knowledge...

The 06-07 (Gas or Diesel) runs a 29 spline 8.25 Chrysler axle. If the shafts have different part numbers for those years, it could be any number of things that would change it (necking, bearing size or even length). But to my knowledge, and we've sold a lot of them for that axle here and world wide for the Cherokee KJ in Aus and Mexico... the center section is the same. So the RD93 fits into it just fine.

Now, for some reason, I want to cut your ear off.

Wasn't there something about grinding down a bit off the C-clips to install a locker? Don't remember if it was the Powertrax or the Detroit, but i'm 99% certain I read that...because reading it is exactly as good as experiancing it, right? :D

And if so/if not, how does this all affect those of us with '02-5 KJs? At all? And how does it affect the overall strength of the axle? I know with C-clip eliminators in a GM 10 bolt or 8.8 Ford, you supposedly gain strength, but for some reason the axles leak. Why would the axles have changed just to fit some silly tone ring on the axle, and where are the rear tone rings for the ABS/TCS/ESP on the 06+ Liberty? I'm assuming they use the same ring gear tone ring for the speedo?
