Post subject:  How to combine two recovery straps

Is it safe to use a D-Ring to daisy-chain two straps? Also, I'm looking to buy two good straps without breaking the bank. Are Neiko's any good? Amazon.com has a "40,000lb" 4x30" strap for $40...

i would not reccomend a D shackle for that ( if a strap breaks its a projectile)

loop the ends together and insert a thick bit of branch or a rolled up magazine so the two straps wont bind together

dont daisy them..let the go idependent of each other...the are designed to work that way...you can make extra stressors on the rope

There are situations where 30' is not enough so I just want to know what the best way is to combine them...

Got it. Now I just need to know, what straps should I get? I've been dealing with whatever was sold at advance auto and now I want something that will last...

Something like this is what Fouros is talking about. I thought there was a whole long drawn out thread about this a few years back. Off to do more searching

that would work, but what it is made for is to loop the strap you have around something and fasten it with the dog bone, little different than attaching two straps, like I said it would work, but generally just use a short piece of say 2x2 or even a tree branch couple of inches at least in diameter with a good heavy coat thrown over it (just in case)

now your talking about yanking somone or just tugging...because if your just tugging somone...you should have a rope plenty strong already...if your yanking someone...a snatch rope the stretches is what you want..i have a 35 foot 25,000 pound procomp rope that works great... if you can't get them with in that length your going to need A- a whinch or B- multipul vehicals

I doubt very much whether Fouros was talking about putting a heavy chunk of steel like that between two snatch straps! That is designed to make a loop in the end of a tow-strap for fitting through an eye rather than over a hook. In a snatch situation it would be as potentially lethal as a D-shackle. Tow straps aren't designed to stretch and so there is minimal stored energy if something breaks: snatch straps are the complete opposite.

Use a rolled-up newspaper - far less lethal!

no i wasnt talking about a chunk of metal between the two straps

again possible projectile

when i did some basic 4wd recovery training i was told to use a rolled up newspaper, magazine or a stout tree branch cut into a 2 foot length
if you needed to combine 2 snatch straps, for added length so you can recover the vehicle safely .

ie thread the 2 loops through each other and then place the rolled up mag or branch through the two loops, if you dont the straps will bind together and you will never get them apart

when using a winch throw a travel blanket or jacket over the cable to stop any recoil if the cable breaks

i guess i should have asked for clarification , were you wanting to join two snatch straps together or two tow straps

like pipeliner said two different animals

X2 except we always had 4wd magazines in the car which work just as well...

last thing i'd want to use is something that could turn into a projectile.
same principle as using towballs or towing points...

never use anything that has weigth behind it if it can fly off

If you have to link the straps; Lay both of them side by side, slide one eye through the end of the other strap, do this on oposit way's on both ends, now slide the eye's towards each other until they are interlocked. This way the straps will retain their full capacity. The best idea is to carry different lenght straps.
Good luck :D
