I've got MTR's and due to bad alignment I have cupped tires so bad ... the noise is my primary speed indicator

At this point in time I think it is the tires. They are just about down to the wear bars but I have a set of MOABs with the factory Rubicon tire on them that I'm picking them up next weekend. I had the balance checked and they are good. I also don't really get a shimmy in the steering wheel at all. I bought the Jeep used with these tires on them, they are liberators which I have learned are cheapies. Is it possibly the ball joints. I was reading the write up on how to test them (which I will do when it stops raining in 2 days), I'm just wondering if that will cause a noise at higher speeds. would this also cause play or movement in the steering? I gave the wheels a tug when they were on the ground but that was inconclusive for obvious reasons. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I'm used to working on little cars (see sig) so this is all new to me. |

Sure sounds like the tires. It seems like the older they get the more noise they make. I had a warbling noise on the way back from a wheeling trip,it was making one heck of a racket. I pulled off the road and found the window trim on the windsheild was coming loosejust snapped it back on. I bet your new tires will fix your problem. |

I put the MOABs on and I'm still getting the noise. today I noticed that when I make turns I hear the brake rotor on the drivers side scrape the pads and when I'm going straight again it stops. This leads me to believe that it's a wheel bearing after all. Would this be a good assumption, and is this a common problem? I checked the ball joints, they are good (not that this would allow the rotor to scrape, just throwing it out there). I called around and it seems that you have to buy the whole hub assembly. How much work are we talking here. I've worked on plenty of cars, I built suspensions and everything, I'm just curious as to how much of a witch this is going to be on this thing. |

My '02's first hub assembly was replaced at around 110k miles. started making a little noise at about 107 or 108. I was like "WOW, it's so QUIET...but now I can hear the driver's side" 
Still haven't replaced that one...116k...and gettin louder 
$150-190 from a local parts house. www.performancepeddler.com has 'em for $62.20 shipped. I figure that's cheap enough to get 20k out of 'em and not feel bad:) |

so, is it possible that they are bad even though they feel solid? Is this a common thing? I hate to spend money on hubs if that's not the problem. |

If you think its your tires, try rotating the rears to the front. The noise should follow. (be louder from rear axle). The rear straight axle should correct uneven tire wear over time/miles. but if you don't fix the alignment issues in the front the tires you move up there will wear unevenly. |

I was getting the same noise with the stock wheels and tires last week. I put the MOABs on and am getting the same exact noise. I'm pretty sure it's the hub/half shaft. |

I replaced the Drivers side Bearing today. It had started to grind pretty bad. It's much quieter now but I think that the pass side is not long for this world either. It was easier to change out than I thought it would be. |

I replaced both of those and my noise is back today.

Yea, the noise came back in mine also. I'm going to swap out the pass side bearing and both CV axles. |
