So, hear me out. I was just thinking about this and just want to check if its a possibility because I've never seen anyone discuss it here before.

Power swaybar disconnects seem pretty cool. I dont really know how they work because I'm fairly new to the off road scene. But, is it even remotely possible to adapt one of these kits to work with a kj? such as the mopar one for a jk.

the JK one takes more space than we have on a KJ

basically the swaybar is cut in half - and each end has a gear mounted on it and a slider that locks the 2 gears together - with a spring that pushes it together as a failsafe.

so the center section is large - that doesn't mean you couldn't change the mounting of the swaybar - but it would take some work.

Google patent search
http://www.google.com/patents
for 6637757 and 6428019
They're the AAM patents for the Wrangler electronic disconnect
- Drawing pages 2/3 show the details

so basically the main issue is space for the center section.

Interesting idea to put the disconnect in the middle. something that could be designed as a manual disconnect as well. Kind of solves all those issues with all that hardware hanging out at the ends of the swaybar.

cut the swaybar down the middle
weld on 1 1/4" OD square tube to each end where you made the cut
use a 1 1/4" ID square tube coupler to lock the ends together when on the road.

Might have to shim it off the frame a bit and add a couple more brackets like the existing ones.

hmmm....

I'd try it, but I've never been convinced that its a good thing to disconnect the IFS for off road use.

hmm interesting. that would be cool too. i like having my discos, but they are actually more of a pain then i'd like to remove. i love the idea of the electric or pneumatic ones because i can just be driving down the road and then find a back road, hit a switch and im ready to go. but a manual one with one pin or something in the middle would be really cool too. especially if you could just remove the pin and then have the two halves be allowed to rotate, just like the electric one does. then theres no "where do i put these greasy links" or "i have to tie up my stupid bar with a lanyard" or anything like that....

Something like this was attempted long ago but due to liability issues, the persons responsible for creating the sawed in half swaybar disconnect had to pull the proposed product before it could be mass marketed. Proceed at your own risk!

Well, i imagine that there would be some issues with torsional stress on the disconnect from the swaybar trying to do it's job. Just thinking! No money to do it anyway!

rather than making the center of the bar the disco point, I had a thought that it might be possible to use a locking hub on one end, instead. thoughts?
