Post subject:  front diff leak
i just got back from the jeep jamboree in the cumberlands (which was ABSOLUTLY FANTASTIC - a few liberty's showed up out there and impressed the trail guides ... as usual :lol: ) but i did notice a slight leak coming from the front diff where the drive shaft connects. Is this just a seal leaking or is it something more than that? I was running some 5-6 rated trails but never hit anything hard up front other than the lower control arm once. Just wondering if anyone had some feedback or if anyone has had this problem before. Thanks alot.

If it is leaking where the yolk inserts right into the Dif then it may be the seal. also remember the D30a has a drain plud on the bottomn check there I had mine leak awhile back ago. the only way to see it is to take the front skid plate off. you ca

i know its not coming from the drain plug. I guess its from where the yolk does insert and hopefully it is just a seal because i was bragging about getting off the trails having no problems other than loosing a tire :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

Mine blew up about a week after it started leaking. I think it may have actually been cracked before it grenaded.

but is it ok to drive on for a week or so? it should only really be affected when 4 wheel drive is engaged, correct? so as long as i keep it in 2 wheel, it should not become worse?

The front diff and drive shaft are in motion whenever the KJ is in motion. Doesn't matter if your in 2wd or 4wd.

Unless there is a chance of running the diff dry, you should be ok until you get it fixed. Drop the skid and stick your finger in the fill hole to make sure the level is still good. Keep an eye on it and keep topping it off until you get a chance to replace the seal.

The front axle/driveshaft is always spining, even in 2wd. I would get a quart of gear oil and top regularly.
