Post subject:  For those that have been dying to know.........
Can you blow the front housing with a differential collar on :?:....... Yes you can :!: I succeeded Sunday at where else but, "Jeep Skool" of all places while performing the duty of tailgunner on a stocker run. The group had just by passed an obstacle, and I just couldn't resist the temptation to try it. I just wasn't satisfied that I didn't make it on the first attempt, so brushing aside common sence, I back down, drop it in 4 LO and put my foot in it. Wrong!... The second try got me...... At first I wasn't sure if my Liberty was just excited and having an orgasm oozing gear oil, or had I actually blown the housing with the collar on!

Moral of the story, the collar did hold the pieces together in order to make it an hour drive home in 2 WD.... Put it up on 4 Jack stands today and saw that the collar had in fact, held the part it was coupled to, and the chunk broke out in front of the collar instead of at the rear, with the crack proceeding along side and upward in the usual manner.

And yeah, I'm getting to old for all this wrenching at my age, so please contribute generously to my SFA fund so I don't have to continue going through this any more.

See I knew that collar would only hold the diff pieces together and NOT prevent it from cracking,I've been saying it for 10 dam* years :lol: (little ID4 there).

Troy, only 10 yrs. :?: :lol: It did save me a tow bill getting home though. So, worth the expence of the collar for me. Last tow bill was $300.00!

Got it covered Tom, just slow going with my back out since Thursday and arthritis acting up in this cold weather. Got it at a friends garage and I'm giving his 17 yr. old Son some hands on experience in pulling a housing out. :wink:

Normal driving = no,hard wheeling = yes.

mustive missed you at jeep skool.. we were there saturday!... maybe you should stay away from that place. first a blown CV then blown front diff!!! .. not a good streak. but look at the up side.. atleast your good at changing them by now. i'm glad to hear that the diff. collar helped hold it together.. and perhaps helped it last longer than if it wasnt there.

I don't think the collar helped you get home. I drove mine about 12 miles after I blew it up. Made some nice sounds but, it didn't keep me from getting it home.

Anytime you "GUN IT," when off-roading, you are asking to break something regardless of the vehicle and its components. This moment happened to be the dif. If you had said you were just trying to get over the obstacle at a normal speed and effort and it broke, then I would be more concerned about the dif collar.

OK, I know the D30 is solid axle and steel, the D30a is independent and aluminum, and that D30 gears work in the D30a. Here's what I'm pondering. Could a D30 be cut down and modified to replace the D30a, maybe call it a D30s?

the D30 gears dont work in the D30a, only in the KK will that work, but the DTT and the ARB will work in the D30a

and although it has been brought up several times, it way easier to think that it would work than it would be to make it work, once you have one out and laying on the floor its easier to see how much would need to be done and then to tackle the cvs etc, would be easier to just SFA!

What if there was a steel housing that could be swapped in, using all the original internals? Maybe something with extended mounts that would make it sit about an inch lower. I think that would fix CV angles some.

couple of years back there was some decussions about this same thing, nothing ever came out of it due to cost and difficulty of it. Not only would you have to fab up brackets to mount but also you would have to determine a way for the seal etc that are in ours for the CVs....
anything is possible of course but this would be way more work/time and money than what you would end up with in the end...SFA best and cheaper in the long run :wink:

Wonder if the diff would of broke sooner if the collar wouldnt of been there?

And that KK case isnt much either.. Looks like they stuck some stuff here and there but being the end all if front diff explosions, I wouldnt bet on it.

i completely agree.. .the collar is cheap insurance for now. i see you have a 6 spd as well.. if we grenade a front diff it could help us out some.. most have 3.73's.. and we have 3.55's so all we'd have to do is change the rear gears after replacing the front diff. to have a gear ratio closer to stock with larger tires :twisted:
