Say your rolling along and you may be in 2wd do you drive in 2wd untill you get stuck and then change to 4wd hi/lo or do you foresee the problem and change to 4wd then?.....OK and here is the real question say you see potential trouble ahead do you creep into it or do you go in with a little me speed and hope momentum gets you through

look ahead and get in 4wd before youre going to need it. i understand that you dont want to use 4wd on pavement and thats not what im talking about. if youre on a dirt road and you know there going to be some mud or loose dirt or something, you might as well get into 4wd when you get on the beginning of the dirt road. dont wait until youre stuck because at that point youve already spun your tires and dug a little hole for yourself and filled up your tire tread.

as far as the creep or speed, depends on the situation. in mud, momentum is your friend. just be sure you know whats under the mud. if theres a rock under there and you go fast, you will break something.
if youre trying to crawl over some rocks, go slow! sand, you need momentum, but dont try not to catch air on those dunes!

i'm not an expert off-roader or anything, so someone with more knowledge will probably come along and correct me! :D

best advice if you have never wheeled before is to get with someone who has wheeled a lot and follow and listen to them. Books have been written on the correct way to approach a certain situations, but each is very different, all depends on where and what you are wheeling over.
I grew up on a farm driving everything from flat bed trucks / tractors/ bull dozers from age 6 so For me I know from looking ahead what I need to do in most cases and plan accordingly. It all comes with time and after a while you don't even think , like riding a bicycle

someone could sit here and write it all out but experience learned from someone while out doing it is the best way to learn
