Post subject: | **WARNING**(about "new" CV shafts) |
Well it's been a fun day at work, got 2 vehicles in,one from CO and one from Kansas(just traveling through),but both had the same problem. The 1st one was a '05 KJ that has been through 10,yes 10, passenger side CV shafts and wanted us to look at it to see what is the problem causing the CV failures. This KJ is totally stock with 40,000miles and the CV boot keeps splitting, inner boot. The owner has put 10 of those "new" CV shafts from Advance Auto/Checker.Well it turns out that those "new" CV shafts are not the right length, when measured against my OEM right side CV shaft and was the cause of the failure. We had both Advance and Checkers send us a right side CV for a '05 KJ,those too where to short,by about 1".Got a remaned CV from Napa and it was the correct length since it is a remaned OEM CV shaft and was $10 cheaper. The 2nd vehicle was a older couple traveling through with a '96 Nissian 200something.Actually it was towed in since the drivers CV came apart.Well lets try this experiment again.Ordered one "new" CV from Advance(same one that was installed already that broke) and one "new" one from Checkers, then we ordered a remaned one from Napa.Of course the bothe "new" CV shafts were about 1" shorter then the remaned OEM CV shaft. So basically my point is stay away from those "new" CV shafts sold at Advance or Checkers, get a remaned OEM CV and save yourself alot of headaches. |

great info.. do those places offer warranties on their parts? pretty shotty business practices if they are aware of it. Did you tell them the parts were wrong lengths? |

Jeep4me99 wrote: great info.. I believe they are lifetime replacement but not going to to much good if there to short. And yes we told them but they claim that's the correct part# so it will work. They don't care if it's the right part or not as long as they get your iniatial investment, the broken parts are covered by the original manufacturer so they're not out any money.

Thats exactly why I buy wax, and small things like that from Advance and those other off names and all "major parts" like brakes/rotors/calipers/CVs etc from NAPA It doesn't matter if they have a lifetime warranty , if you have to keep replacing it , its junk plus in this case TOO SHORT!!! ![]() Bet you had some happy people didn't ya Troy!!! ![]() |

I don't buy auto parts from any retail store. I have a friend who manages a branch of a large (midwest) wholesale auto parts company. I recently replaced both cv's with new from him. Cardone brand. Worked perfectly. And the price was better than any retail parts store could sell for. |

lol....... It is good that you found that problem Troy and got it fixed and reported it here so we would all know. I always use NAPA for parts and have never had a problem with them over the years. They also know what they are talking about. The people at our Advance Auto place don't know diddley either. I thought we just had a bad Advance Auto here. But now I know their parts are crap and to top it all off they don't care. Thanks again, Troy. |

THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID! Hehe I've been happy with NAPA's parts...but locally...their service leaves a bit to be desired. Tens of thousands of dollars of THEIR parts in inventory, and they wouldn't send over a $2 TPMS service pack yesterday because we never order from them. WONDER WHY, maybe because we've got almost anything else we'd need in our freakin' shop, plus they take a freakin day to get anything to us? Pricks. [/rant] ![]() ![]() |

After reading this, I'm glad I replaced my CV's with NAPA ones. I do believe I purchased new ones though. Aprox 1500 miles on them and no signs of failure. |

I had the same problem with my r/f. Advanced axle lasted about 200ft. before it starting clanking and clunking. They are not new. They are chinese rebuilt junk. That is why they are only $69 each. Got a new one from raxles.com and has been working fine ever since. Even had the KJ on the beach last week woopin on it in some deep sand drifts. No problems. |
