This is my first tech post so please be gentle.

I would like to improve the lighting on my 2006 KJ. Keep in mind that I do not do much off road and want to keep the lighting street legal. I would use it on country roads (lots of deer) and to find my way when camping in pastures and other dark places. I would also like to just wire them into my high beams if that is possible. Any advice on brands, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

I have narrowed it down to three options:

1. Get a set of lights for the grill. As you can see, it looks like the cutout is already there. Not sure if the wiring harness or anything else is. I didn't see it.



2. Upgrade to HID headlights. I saw on this board that these were nice.

3. Invest in a new bumper with lights or find some lights that I can mount on the original bumper.

I like option 2.

Those HID packages on eBay are probably junk. Get some decent lights, like Hellas, KCs or PIAAs and mount them on your stock bumper cover or get an ARB, or fab up a light bar.

Headlight upgrades are a good start, for sure. Lots of options there. I did the bulb swap on the headlights and foglights with PIAA extreme white bulbs and it's a big difference. If you're going to add bumper lamps there's some good options there too. Mine are PIAAs also, and they blast a lot of light out there, but Hellas make a good range of lamps also. I prefer to keep them switched separately, but that's just personal choice. Good luck.

Adding a HID kit to a non-HID equipped vehicle is illegal in most states,check your local laws!

I added a set of these to the factory bumper, drilled and mounted right in front on each side. That price shown is for a kit, two lamps and all wiring. I just trigger the relay with the high beam wire. Output is extremely good at 55w and is even better than a pair of 130w KC's I have on a truck.

The FF1000's are a discontinued line but some are still around. The replacement is the new FF700 which I am going to replace my 130w KC's with. That lamp kit can be found for even less than the FF1000's. I don't think the holes in your grill will allow for a large enough lamp that will give good performance.
The HID drop in kit is a bad idea in Halogen Housings for light performance. Lots of good reading about that here.

For a little better low beam just drop in a pair of Sylvania 9007SU bulbs. Those with the added high beam supplement I find very good and I am picky when it comes to lighting, been going through all kinds on my Dodge truck since 05.

There's a number of ways to light up the road.

You can drill a couple of holes in your bumper and mount a pair of lamps on it.

You can by a Westin Bullbar and mount a couple of lamps on it.

You can fabricate a light bar for your roof rack.


Our you can do what I did and buy a roof basket and put four Hella 500's on it.


Actually mine aren't street legal either, too many and too high up but the sure light up the road. The HID's would be nice however they likely wouldn't be cheap or street legal. You're better off spending the money for a set of quality Hella's or PIAA lamps.

While you're trying to decide you can begin with upgrading the stock headlight bulbs.

I'd just add a Mopar "Factory" fog light kit to the stock openings in the grill (If available for your model year, I bought a set of Mopar fog lights for my 2004 KJ). Or purchase a good set of driving lights and mount them onto your bumper for starters.
Or look at what other members her have done, (ie. "MidnightLiberty" (I beleive) mounted a nice set of aftermarket lights in front of the stock fog light apertures. Looks relly good as well.

What I did on my jeep is quite simple: get original fog lights that fit in the holes (see ebay auction #370153124750) and after I got a HID kit that fit in with 3500k light (amber). The lightbulb that fits in is a 9145 which is quite similar to H10. You can also get yellow halogen light bulbs (http://www.racinglab.com/nohyyeprohal12.html). Where I live there's a lot of fog and snow so yellow light is the way to go, white light will just glare you. This is just great and I see the road real well. I have to admit that the oem head lights are really not that great. I will upgrade to silverstar asap. I will also add driving lights when I get my arb bumper. (hopefully somewhere this year)
