I haven't had a chance (or $) to put tow hooks on my wife's KJ. It doesn't go off road, but we live on a steep hill that becomes unpassable in the snow. Where can I put a strap on her Jeep if it gets stuck? It doesn't have a hitch either.

I know it needs to have real tow points added, this is just in case there is a winter emegency before I get around to it.

I was out driving the other day on some sandy roads and found a 2wd nissan truck (w/ no tow hooks) that had burried it rear axle quite effectively.

I didn't want to drive around it and pull it out from the back since the sand behind the truck was soft enough that we sank down about six inches on every step, and was afraid of doing the same thing to my jeep that they had done.

We ended up attaching it to the frame of the truck in the front and pulled from there, you might could do the same thing if you don't have skid plates, but you might have to dig a ways to find it.

I would take uvalax236's advice before mine since he knows more than me.

I've always been told to attach to hard points and to stay away from the axel.
Thats not to say I haven't used the axel during recovery.

Find some hard points before the snow flies or cough up the money for tow hooks.

if you do use the axle, put it right where the control arm is, that would be the strongest part of the axle.

Yes, attach right near the control arm. This is the best place to recover from if you dont have a rear recovery point. If you attach to the frame you run the risk of serious damage. I got stuck with out tow hooks and had to suffer sub-frame damage on the front end to get out. Now my ARB sits a little higher because I had issues getting it totally on. I have to go to a shop now and get them to tighten all of the bolts because I cant get them on tight enough to level out the bumper. Moral of the story: GET RECOVERY FIRST!

That's what I did...and then I decided to avoid doing anything stupid until I get some tow points on the rig.

now in the front, you want to make a slip knot directly around the coil on the spring, right?:) and make SURE that your buddy's 1 ton diesel pickup has about 200 feet of slack in the steel cable to get up some momentum so he can MAKE SURE to get you out, right? (this was a joke, not meant to be taken seriously)

$20 bucks gets you 2, 10k lb tow hooks from JCWhitney. 30 minutes and they're installed.

Lets see.

Internet + JCWhitney = www.jcwhitney.com

Where do I put them?

2 rectangular openings in the bumper cover + holes in bottom of bumper bar = front tow hook mounting.

I always preferred simple math. :-)

Got pics of these tow hooks? I'm not aware of any aftermarket hooks for the KJ. Anything currently available would take a bit of fab work to install. I would love to be proven wrong though...

take a look at my bumper, those two hooks cost $7 apiece from the local tractor supply. I mounted one bolt through the existing hole for the oem tow hooks and drilled out the other hole. It took some wrist action to get the back nuts on inside the bumper, but you could use nutzers as well. works great... rated 10k lbs.

There are two sets of hooks on JC Whitney, one SET is $13.99/15.99 (Chrome or Black PC) and the other "CUSTOM FIT" set is $59.99.

Does anyone know if there are mods required for either set or if they just bolt on as is?

Guys.....
There are no need for drills or mods of any kind to attach the tow hooks that I got from JCWhitney.

The holes are there........

All you need are a couple of wrenches and a few minutes of your time.

I'm sorry but I can't explain it any plainer. Its a VERY simple operation.

I'm used to XJ's, so I could be wrong, but don't you need to brace the unibody for front tow hooks? If you don't, I think a hard pull would rip the bolts right out of the unibody. Here's some applicable links from another XJ site.

http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.p ... =tow+hooks

It would be nice if it was as easy as KJKEv says but I'm worried those could become deadly missiles.

I've seen pictures of un-reinforced XJ tow hooks torn clean off.

Kaya, not trying to bash XJ's or anything, but the KJ is built a LOT tougher than the XJ ever could have hoped to be. also, there are spots on the body specifically built for installing tow hooks, since they come from the factory like that:)

that being said...i wouldn't trust an aftermarket tow hook, I'd rather just go ahead and pony up the billion dollars on the Mopar hooks to be safe. better $80 poorer than have an extra hole in your head.

When KJ's come from the factory with tow hooks, are they simply bolted to the unibody, or is there bracing included?

http://www.jeepinoutfitters.com/images/ ... ackets.jpg

This is what you need on an XJ. It is very similar to the Mopar one and bolts to the unibody where the bumper is mounted.

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but I want to be sure I do this right si I don't damage my new Jeep or kill somebody.

These things should come stock from the factory with tow hooks. Trail rated my booty.

They are simply bolted to three existing bolt holes for each side of the unibody. Tow hooks were originally designed way back in the day to be direct-frame mount for heavy duty applications. No frame - no use. Either get brackets made like for the XJ or get a front mount hitch.
