LOST JEEPS :: View topic - What happened to the US?

It all comes down to money - it's cheaper to produce out of country.

Ran into the same basic setup as callaway when I worked for another company that manufactured electronic parts. They would build units over in

aylasia, send them to our facility in Tempe to be tested, shipped back to

aylasia and from there sent to customers around the world. Even with all the transportation costs it was still cost effective (or so they thought) to do it that way.

With the company I work for now at least we manufacture the basic circuits here, then they go to one of the final assembly plants in the midwest, Switzerland or Costa Rica depending on the market they will ultimately reach. I just wish we could get out of this slump and get back to our 'normal' production rates (we are currently running about 60% of normal).

To the original comment - the reason Australia has so many products is that they have a natural market that develops and uses off-road products - the Outback is a huge test area and a population interested in exploring it - ARB and OME have been winners in that market - so they have very high quality products to compete in the US market.

I have an '06 crd, I have Aussie suspension, shocks, diff cover, bumper, winch, and off road lights. Why aren''t they made in the US? We can do this.

Yes we can make it here but we have to keep our money heading down and help them out as well, plus they make darn good stuff But why is that? Look at their off road equipment, off road trailers, I have to go there some day! Some of their off road camping trailers are like looking at a beautiful woman ...sweet

It all comes down to money - it's cheaper to produce out of country. I know it's a different world, but my job makes store displays and fixtures. Even with all the shipping/carton/storage fees ( not to mention the extra time ) involved with getting a finished production run back from China it's still usually cheaper than doing a production run with a metal vendor the next city over. I'm just a lowly engineer - if I had a choice of vendors I'd use a domestic vendor, but the project managers need to squeeze out every last dime they can and, more often than not, jobs end up being run in China =/

but on the flip side of all of that a local (Ohio based ) maker of washers/dryers etc closed a plant down in Mexico and opened another line in one of its plants here due to the higher cost of shipping everything back to the US

LOL, my Dad worked with the M for sometime back in Illinois. He liked it there but said that the upper management at his plant were a bunch of stripped screws, lol. Not worth a darn and that in turn ended up bitting the plants in the rear and they shut it down. Shame too it was a hell of a facility. Now it is more or less rotting our in the fields, As for the US, it is getting...sad indeed. Several of my attorney's have actually gotten duel citizenships because they say they are going to go to a...what was the term they used...I cant remember now. Sorry long day already here. But they want to go to a different company with better health services and schools. Please keep in mind I am in Nevada and we have the worst school district in the states. And we are cutting another 150Million from their already meager budget. I shut up now

Actually he didn't mention his motor. And I assumed he was referring to aftermarket parts? If so, there are other choices beside Australian products. Not that's there is anything wrong with Australian products. As for the M - Xodius do you know which plant he worked at? My grandmother was the executive secretary to the CEO (Bob Galvin) for almost 40 years. We cannot afford to loose more jobs here - illegal's are depending on our citizens.
