Post subject:  '06 KJ Renegade Stuck in 4HI

Hey guys, I've got a bit of a situation here. I was out doing some offroad geocaching with the wife's KJ while she is out of town, now the "part time 4 wheel drive" light won't go out.

I had it in 2HI for the most of the trip, then I stopped (even though not necessary) and shifted to 4HI before I proceeded for a bit, then for a fun hill, stopped - shifted to neutral and dropped it into 4LO. After playing around a bit on the hill, and getting into a flat area covered with gravel, I shifted back into neutral and then dropped the transfer case lever back into 2HI. When I started to drive off, the part time 4 wheel light never turned off. I tried all of the combinations of shifting in and out of the various transfer case positions, backing up for a while, going forwards, checking for loose and/or dirty wires, but no luck. The only time I can get the light to turn off is when I put the transfer case lever into the 4HI position. :?

The wife gets home tomorrow afternoon. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have similar issue as seems to be common if you read the forums. The sensor for the shifter is malfunctoning and although it is annoying the concensus from the experts here it does not affect anything. After a while you just ignore it or a common " fix " is tape over the light. tell the wife it was always like that and she just did not notice before. If still under warranty stealership will fix otherwise prob not worth expense.

Yep, those transfer case position sensors are pretty fragile. If you're feeling adventurous you can unplug the sensor to completely disable the light - it's a bit of a pain to get to, though. Look at your transfer case from the rear, you should see the tail cone where the rear driveshaft comes out and the speedo sensor. Trace the speedo sensor wire back to where it splits, and follow the lead that goes forward and toward the center of the vehicle - that leads to the position sensor, and on top of the transfer case you should see the wire coupler. There's a plastic latch holding the two halves together that unclips and swings open, then the two halves will separate after a bit of persuasion. If you want to, tape over the open connector and zip tie it out of the way to keep it safe for future use.

Thank goodness we have a little over 500 miles left of warranty, we took it in and had the dealership fix it.

I think it's time to sell this thing and move on. Fun little ride, but it's not very comfortable, not enough little storage areas, and with the sensitivity of stuff like this we are just done with it.

Thanks for the advice and info!

Yea, if you are upset about something as little as a position sensor you better get out while you can! Maybe a toyota product would better suit your needs?? I hear they are darn near perfect! At least to unknowing people they are....

Just giving you a hard time. 8)

Yeah.. I just read what I wrote again and I totally deserved that one
Nawww.. the main issue I have with the KJ is that it is so friggin uncomfortable! If it were more comfortable, I could deal with all the other stuff.

It's a Jeep, bet your YJ doesn't ride as good as your KJ does.

You are absolutely right about that.. but I never planned on my YJ being comfortable, it's just a toy to play in the rocks with, not a daily driver or something to take my parents out in.

Besides, my vote /opinion doesn't count as much as the wife's does  and this is her ride.

Maybe I'm jaded, but what's so uncomfortable about the KJs? The only thing I didn't like about mine was the ride and traction from the stock tires and shocks, and that was easy to fix. Storage is another issue, and I'll agree with you about that - a visor storage sleeve and Wet Okole seat covers with pockets went a long way to help that, though.

Part time light stays on in 2wd and goes off in 4hi. Retarded, and its going to bug the doo doo out of me. Anyone got any guestimates on the part $'s?

Couple Thousand.. Its made of solid awesome metal. 8)

Under $100.. I would sell it as quickly as possible though so that sensor doesnt need to be replaced. $100 is almost three payments on a new Toyota Prius! Better hurry!

^^ Lol too bad it can't be as easy as flipping the wiring to the light bulb on the dash...to turn of off backwards to normal operation. Man, does that even make sense? I've been job hunting on the internet way to long.

Part number for an '03 KJ is 5083138AA - five position transfer case switch. It's about $50.
