Post subject:  my power trax no work so i fixed the problem

i found out today in order to put a locker in a liberty 8.25 axle w/ 4:56 gears or higher will not work...spent most of last night trying to figure this thing out...either the locker is bad or the carrier just will not work...a full carrier locker might work but a special carrier pin is needed and some other things

was putting 4:56 gears in w/ a power trax locker that came out of a same spline xj 8.25...the kj axle is a little longer then the xjs just to let you all know...once the locker was in the carrier, we could not get the pin in for two reasons...1st the ring was in the way and 2nd the passenger shaft was all the way in after putting the c-clip in...thus made it impossible to slid the carrier pin in...so even if you could get it passed the ring gear...you still could not get it passed the pass. side axle shaft...also checked the part number and the kj and xj had the same so if you are going to buy a power trax locker make sure you get it in writing that it will fit...

so i happened to have close by a Dana 44hd axle w/ the center section switch out from the aluminum to a steal housing...that said...i will be swapping in a Dana 44hd axle still using 4:56, sense i already bought and installed the ones in the front, and a Aussie locker...

Just curious, if it wont fit past the ring gear how did you get the pin out?

Once you put the c-clip back on youve got to pull the slack out of the axles to seat the c-clip by pulling out on the axles. Maybe I read that part wrong though, idk.

Does the 4:56 gears require a different carrier than the 3:73 or 4:10 gears? I cant figure out why youre having troubles just b/c you have 4:56 gears??

Heres my power trax:

So what youre saying is when you pull the pin out that holds the spider gears in it hits the ring gear? Still cant figure out how you got it out

What are you going to do about the speed-o?

Very interesting. I'll see what happens when I put my 4.88s in. If the locker won't work I'll be getting an Aussie to match my front and someone on here will get a deal on a used Powertrax.

4.56 and 4.88 gears in a 8.25 will require you to grind tooth of the gear to fit the pin locker or not carrier replacement or not. there is no way aroud it. do not grind the pin

jeepjeepster is right with your c clip. you have to remove the pin, insert the axle fully , put the clip on then pull on the axle to make space for the pin to go back. when I bought my arb they supplied various thickness of c clip in case the pin still cant fit with the axle seated in. you can grind your c clip if they dont fit

Why didn't you just take the carrier out, and take the ring gear off :?

Seems a lot less work;)

Thats the thing I cant figure out. He says he got the locker in which meant he had to take the pin out. How did he get it out to find out it wont go back in? :? :?

if he took out the whole carrier you can unbolt the ring gear from the carrier and simply place the locker inside.. bolt the ring gear back on and put it in the diff.

that's just an educated guess.. that's how it works with a D30 atleast. i put in my aussie without taking the carrier out.

4:56 gears are thick gears...they are wider then 4:10 and lower, why i don't know...when the gears came out it had 4:10s and open diff...that's how i was able to get the pin out...when i put the new ring gear on it goes a little passed the hole for the pin...that's not so much the prob but the pass axle is in too far and it will not move back enough to get the pin in...put the c-clip in out it will not fall out??? so i know the c-clip can be drilled and if someone wants the locker let me know i'll put it up after i get it out...i can't just put the spiders back in because they are toast so i would need to buy new spiders and for the price i could almost buy an Aussie, which i'm doing, for the 44...maybe i should get Cherokee emblems after this and say i imported it...lol...it's easier this way believe it or not...

This is easy to get around. All you need to do is grind the gear tooth a bit to allow removal of the cross pin. This is a pretty standard procedure in the world of differentials when running low gear ratios on c/clip style rear axles.
