Post subject:  *Emergency* Split D30 Diff Case Need Help Now!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just went out on my very 1st time wheeling and split the aluminum front diff case. What should I do? I am currently 70mi from home, Liberty is driveable. Had to drive about 15mi. to get back to pavement anyway. So what, if anything else would get worse if i try to drive it anywhere else???

if you drive it 70 miles there are chances you will blow your cv's or driveshaft too as your gears are probably damaged and some piece of metal will get in there and chew everything up. your best solution is to call a towing or call buddies with tools and disasemble the cv shafts

Yeh, thats what I did. Got someone with a trailer on his way to me now. Hope that only the diff case and gears are shot. And not the differential or axleshafts.

Was that your vey first time wheeling with the DTT?

Sad thing is, I wasn't even actually wheeling when this happened. On the way into the wheeling area, I came upon a stuck Ford Ranger and tried to help him out and after I hooked up the to strap and started easing back in reverse, he was just about out of the ditch while the KJ was straining when all h*ll broke loose........literally.

That's too bad. So how did it happen? Were you in 4low? Was the front wheel spinning and then found traction?

No spinning involved at all, was in 4lo, just a strong heavy load pulling steady in reverse. Heck, didn't even try jerking on the strap!!!

hmmm. I've never pulled from the front but have from the rear hitch. I wonder if that's what caused it.

Lame!!! I get reminded of how broke I am every time someone breaks one of those....*gulp*

Time to sacrifice another window regulator to the D30a gods

Wow.

I've dragged lots of things driving backwards in the KJ without issue...

Hmm, yea, never heard of anyone breaking one by just giving it gas.. Seems very odd.

And this is why I have never pulled anyone out in reverse with any rig. I've seen this once and it won't happen to me.

Yeh, seems it has something to do with the CRD, too much torque, and turbo lag/spool timing.

I believe the gears are weaker going backwards. I've seen a Toyota Tacoma destroy the front diff pulling backwards. I've heard of many other types of vehicles breaking stuff pulling backwards. I've done lots of pulling forwards and never broken anything so I'll stick with that.

i would imagine it stresses a different part of the differential?

All weight going down on the front diff while pulling from front. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Wondering about that DTT and proper install also. Another possibility since we don't know...... Did you buy the 2005 CRD new or used? If used, it could have had a hairline crack (undetectable possibly) prior to you buying.

I don't think I'd pull backwards but I do use my winch quite often.

Man I hate reading these kinds of posts. It makes me think it's only a matter of time before my front diff goes. Every time I get a front wheel hopping trying to climb something, I jam the brakes and hope for the best.
