Post subject:  On board air
I'm thinking about running a compressor and tank into the KJ, all depending on this and that.

Wondering though-how big of a tank do you think one would need to air up 4 31s when coming off the trail? a 3 gallon tank wouldn't take up much space, but I don't think it'd take all 4 hoops to 35 from 15-20. For the time being, I'm probably going to just run a tank with no compressor.

And what about compressors? Viairs seem to be good 'nuff...I'd rather not spend close to $400 on an ARB.

i carried one of those roadpro style jumpstart/compressor combos in my cheyenne for jumping / reairing and it didn't have to be plugged in for the compressor to work and it had a few lighter style plugs on it to operate any 12volt accessories while camping or whatever if you for instance needed to pump up someones air mattress or whatever (eyeroll hehe)

it would take 10-15 mins to air up all 4 tires but it gave me time to do a walk around, pull out tree limbs, check fluids, have a smoke etc

just an option!

CO2 tank is best - but lot of folks at Moab - were using the
Masterflow 1050 / Superflow MV50 - connect to the battery

I agree. While It would be nice to have OBA via a compressor, I would want an engine driven version and since that isn't happening any time soon on the KJ, I'll stick w/ the Powertank. I have used it for power tools, airing up Lots of tires, seated a bead w/ it and it works fast and great for everything. I Thought my home made version was It once then I got the PT and now can hardly stand using my old setup.

I love finishing up airing up quickly then I can go around and try to have conversations w/ everyone that is still working on thsier second tire w/ those noise maker setups that take forever.

TBJ, Where did you have in mind to mount the tank or are you talking about a portable one?

How fast does your PT fill a tire JJ and JL? My home brew setup will do one from 18 psi to 36 psi in about 1 minute.

when i worked at the marina, we would carry scuba tanks in the trucks for airing tires on long trips. they make adapters for them for valve stems, power tools, etc. simple and relativly inexpensive. and they come in any size from about 10 cu ft to 100 cu ft

IIRC Dan (roachman3700) did a demo with his at my first AZ get-together and it took a 31" tire from 15-35 in about 10-15 secs - much better than the $50 Masterflow compressor. Don't get me wrong, I think my Masterflow is great for what I do but if I had the extra funds I would SO get a Powertank 8)

X2 on the CO2. I aired up all 4 of my 35's from 10-26 psi in less than 6 minutes including set up. I used to run an air tank and compressor, it was a Joke. My 7 gal tank at 125 psi would take one of my 32's from 15-28, after that it would be empty, and I would spend the next 15 minutes doing the other three tires.

Ive got a small Craftsman 2 gallon air compressor I use around the house for airing up tires, using brad nailers, etc. It will not air up one tire more than 10psi without needing to kick on.. Not sure when it kicks on but its somewhere over 80psi so there isnt much left when it does kick in..

I must say that I was impressed with the setup Pixeldzn has on his TJ. If I had to copy a setup it would be that. Maybe he'll come on here with some pics.

When I had stock sized tires my 5 gal air tank would fill up 2 tires barely depending on how much air they needed. With my 32's i'm lucky to fill up one tire with it. With 31's i would think you would be looking at a 10-15 gal air tank (huge) to fill 4 tires. It's just not worth it. Just use an air compressor or C02 tank (if you're lucky enough to have them in your area).

Oh, and i don't think the compressor and tank idea would work. I have a 5 gal air compressor at i home that i use for my air tools and tried to fill my portable 5 gal tank up with it but it does not generate enough pressure to fill the tank up much. You have to fill tanks at a service station that has a decent compressor.

Some day :roll: I need to dig out my 20 pound CO2 sitting in one of the corners of the garage and fill it to see how it does, keep forgetting to do that :wink:
Maybe put that on my list for this week :lol: :lol:

Here's mine: About 27.5" tall and nearly 8" wide. :shock: It also came with a nice mounting device as seen in the photo.

If I recall correctly pix has Kilby's on board air set up.

I bought a power tank set up the week after I got home from Moab. after I saw how well it worked I couldn't resist. But man was it pricey after it was said and done. Haven't had a chance to use it yet tho

passenger side of the cargo area, or directly behind the back seat, or...or...

But it'd be semi-permanently affixed.
