I will apolagize up front if this is redundant question and has been covered before. :oops:

But I have a couple of questions and hopefully the members here can help.

I have an 03 sport w/a 2.5" skyjacker lift, 245/70/16 toyo at's and they rub on the front.

I was comparing Al's 6" kit, his 4" kit and a frankenlift(?) kit.

Seems like the parts in Al's 4" and 6" kit are skyjacker parts. I thought they only made a 2.5" kit? Does he get the extra lift from spacers or ?

Also, I would like to run a 265(32") or 285(33") tire. Should I be concerned with the front or rear axle shafts breaking under that size of tire? I like to go wheeling, not real hardcore and not really into busting up body panels.

What is a good solid lift kit to install and get good daily driver/good trail use out of?

Not looking for anyone to bash on a particular kit, just honest talk, good or bad.

Also, I will be adding an ARB bumper w/winch and a rocklizard rear bumper, so weight will also be an issue.

Hiya and welcome to LOST!

First of, if find it really weird you have a tire rub with a tire that fits under a stock KJ.

So either you made a typo or there's something seriously wrong with the skyjacker kit.

245/70/16....shouldn't that be 245/75/16...?

A little rub on the inner fender and or stabilizer bar is quite normal, just heat up the plastic and push it out of the way.

Did you pound the pinch weld?

On the JBA 4" and 6" lifts, he uses longer spring shock combo's. Do remember that with the tire sizes you are posting you need to regear the front and rear diff's, from your stock 3.73 to 4.10...

And for a 33" tire and a good dd car....it's one or the other. Your MPG will be awfull...

First we have a great thread with lifts and everything almost you need to know.
Now the Skyjacker ( unless it was one of the very first few that was produced ) will not hold an ARB due to the later ones being softrides and about the same as stock weight wise.
OME Heavy Dutys will hold up and are designed for the ARB bumper, most you can run is 265-75-16s and then some rubbing will occur and of course fuel mileage and power will decrease unless you regear. 245-75-16s is a good all around size with stock gearing

The Frankenlift is a good solid kit easy bolt on and no many problems at all
or you can go OME springs, Rancho or OME shocks and a couple of little tricks and end up with 3 inches or so of lift as well

Lots of others will be showing up here in a minute to twist your head in other directions :wink:

33"s are too big the front diff (D30a) cant handle the tire and it will break. 32" is the biggest that is recommended and if you go that big you will get crappy MPG, and its best to regear to 4.10, which is your only other option, and its not cheap either your looking at about $650 just for the parts plus a professional install. The best lift available for the KJ is OME HD coils and the Rancho shocks. the p/n's are OME 927 for the front HD and OME948 for the rear coils and then Rancho RSX17004 for the rear shocks and RSX17505 for the front and you can buy all of the parts from AllJs, www.boulderbars.com, and that should net you about 3" and it will support the ARB bumper and is really the only suspension that will support the extra weight from a bumper and/ or winch. Or for alittle more you can buy the frankenlift which uses spacers to gain a little more lift but costs more, I would just do the OME HD with the pn's I gave you and then add a rear iso and then do a front cleivs and maybe a strut plate and you will be about the same height as a Frankenlift

OK looks like I'm really leaning towards the 265/75/16 tire size. So the info towards that would be really great and much appreciated.

ARB is just about 30 min. away so I would be able to get the coils no problem and 4 Wheel Parts warehouse is a block away from ARB so getting the shocks is also no problem.


Looking at most everyones sig lines, it seems like it is a mixture of parts?

Also, who has the orange Liberty (Troy?). What kind of lift does he have. Seems like he is carrying a lot of extras. Larger Spare tire, hi-lift, gas can etc...... In some of the pics it looks like it wheels great. Anyone?

He has one of the first Skyjacker, they had high coils ratings but after a little while they lowered the rating, OME is your best bet, and I say Rancho bc they are good and they are cheaper than OME and some say that the OME shocks are softer then the Ranchos. If you go 265/75, you will REALLY want to regear, ask some other members that have 32" tires and see what MPG they are getting and it will be slow.

I went wheeling with a sweet Zuk on V Day. He was running a crawl ratio of 6.5:1 with a final drive ratio of 125:1 with 5th gear being almost as low as 1st.

i figure i might as well through another rock in the pond..


if you plan to add an ARB bumper and winch you will get sagging and rubbing in the front with a frankenlift or OME HD springs and 265/75's. i corrected that by replacing my gas frankenlift OME HD (927) springs with the CRD frankenlift OME HD (970) springs. they have a much higher spring rate and carry the arb and winch much better.. plus i regained the height i lost as well as on road characteristics that i loved with the frankenlift without bumper/winch.

all that aside.. i STRONGLY STRONGLY suggest a frankenlift.. doesnt matter which one.. just get one you wont be dissapointed (i got the basic one and LOVE it).. if you have a pretty tight budget go for what others suggested.. just the OME springs and rancho shocks with some low budget height adders (isolators rear and clevis lift front).
