Post subject:  Vin Says No Trac-Lok....Axle Says Trac-Lok on The Housing...

I asked a Jeep Dealer Ship if it had Trac-Lok they got my VIN and told me it Wasn't in there, But since then I've changed the fluid (Used Friction Modifier) and seen that its there. Just wondering if anyone has an Explanation for this?

Without a picture to verify if you do have one, Maybe some one added one to the vehicle...

An Entire Axle? It has the Green Tag that Says Trak-Lok, 3.73 Gears, 8.25 etc. Also I find it weird that I have a Limited, That according to Jeep left the plant with a 6 disc Changer Infinity Audio, 17" Wheels (I like the 16's it actually has more), No Trak Lok and when I got it it had 16" Factory Wheels, and the bottom of the Line CD Player/Speakers, and a Complete 8.25" Axle with Trak-Lok. Tonight I CarFaxed it (I definetly should have done this 7 Months ago) and turns out it was Smashed. in Late 05 and Sat for 6 months being repaired until it was re-registered. I'm thinking possible VIN Tag Swap???

I meant a pic of the carrier, but if it was wrecked previous, that is a possible explanation. Not sure about Canada, but here a dealership must disclose if the vehicle was ever reported in an accident. You may want to check you local laws.

Yeah They have to Disclose it atleast in my Province of Canada. I even asked them straight up if it had been Smashed and they said NO. So off too see a Lawyer Monday afternoon. I still love the Liberty Tho.

The only other Owner was The Ontario Ministry of Transport. So I doubt it. Plus wouldn't they have just added the Trak-Lok, and not swapped an Entire Axle Housing? Plus the other weird stuff thats changed around i.e. Stereo/Wheels. Plus this Axle Housing AGAIN has the Green ID Tag with Axle INFO!

Without seeing the actual trac lok in the jeep it is hard to say. Maybe the tag was placed there by mistake. Open the diff and take a peek.

I think the real important thing is that it doesn't matter if it's there (or how it even got there). He was lied to and given false info by the dealer, which in this case, is not only underhanded and immoral (and normal), but also illegal..

You could also go to <customerassist@daimlerchrysler.com> and request a build sheet with your vin#. The trac-loc is listed as: DSA - Anti-spin Differential Rear Axle.

you could tell if you get the wheels spinning in the snow and have someone see if only one is spinning or both.

If it was wrecked, the factory axle housing could have been bent or had link mounts ripped off or... Then the cheapest/easiest repair would have been to swap in a complete unit from a boneyard, which gave you the difference? If a 17" rim or two was trashed in the crash ( not unusual with alloy rims), junkyard 16's are easier to find & cheaper. I think all of the stuff you are talking about leads towards a heavy rebuild of a totalled jeep over a VIN swap.

i have had the same question about my jeep when i bought it. according to the door sticker i should have 16" rim but i have the aluminum clad 17". thats all i can see that not right compared to the build sheet.

lift up the rear and spin tires w/ your hand...if bothe tires spin in the same direction you have some type of added locking device

Well, if it was added after it was built, it wouldn't show up by a dealership, so they can't be accused of lieing, since they did a vin search, and told you what they did. Secondly, most sales guys at dealerships, Jeep or not, are NOT mechanics, and no VERY LITTLE about the vehicles they sell outside of what is in the broucher, or on the sticker on the side.

Salesman's lack of knowledge doesn't relieve dealership from liability to disclose major accident damage. Hard part is , if it was fixed in somebody's garage with a few guys over a weekend with parts from local junkyard and a few beers..no CARFAX record. Not your case since your have record. I hate "stealerships" and think most are borderline at best however unless they withheld info it probably is not their fault, "technically". If you have written carfax report or claim from dealer prior to sale "no crashes" CARFAX themselves guarentee the sale. If it was verbal only..good luck. In Vegas I am told CARFAX given upon request but not automaticly included (wonder why??). IMO fake "surpises" pop up in cases like yours and salesman claims " didn't know that was there" when asked for CARFAX report that shows wreck on vehicle he told you was clean. Don't know if law says it has to be included or just available upon request but I have had to ask on the last 3 I bought. Keep us posted and good luck.

Lawyer thinks he can atleast get some cash taken off what's left owing on it. So thats a BONUS cause we payed top dollar for it, He thinks that at best they will just take it back and pay us back the money
