cut CV shafts

The inner CV cup,it's hardened steel and a chop saw is about the only way to do it without spending big $$$$.Just remember that the 3/8" you need to cut off now removes the recess for the internal clip that holds the inner CV together and reducing the area that a the clamp for the boot goes.Best bet is to get the JE Reel cut CV's.

Do what you want, I've never had the boot come off and never had the cv come apart, (knock on wood), I have had grease ooze out but I packed them with grease when the boots were off. :wink:

The JE Reels are cut from the other side and you don't have to worry like tjkj says!

so reel cut some of the differential side, and some of the knuckle side? for a net loss of 3/8" :?:

hypothetically speaking say i have access to a machine shop, could i just do that and solve the previously mentioned issues?

You can't cut the outer CV cup,there's nothing to cut.

Perhaps pics with arrows pointing at the area where the cuts were made would help everyone.

Here you go................

The outer CV,no material to cut off without the joint falling apart.

The inner CV,note the rib that has a yellow line on it,that is 3/8" to that ridge.

A look at how much that 3/8" missing(this cup is not cut)would hinder clamping the boot on.

The pic below shows the inside of the inner cup,the blue arrows show the internal clip groove,that clip prevents the inner joint from falling out of the cup and that groove would be cut off with the 3/8" removal.

The pic below you can see the internal clip that holds the inner CV in.
