Post subject:  Floating steering rack after lift??

Hello everyone,

About a year after my lift I noticed heavy bumpsteer and that the steering rack had a mind of its own. I took it by several places and they told me that my steering rack was bad, along with my tires being cupped. I also have a shaking in the steering that feels like unbalanced tires, but the tire place told me the tires were bad and needed to be replaced.

Thats when I decided to get the entire steering rack assembly replaced, at the dealership, for $1500. Everything was fine for about a week or two, and then it went back to how it was!!?? $1500 out the window....

What do I do now? Is this normal? I never heard of anyone on here having this problem. My setup is listed in my sign.

Thanks for any help!

My gosh, thats a lot of money to just throw away..

Mine was the same way when I had 255 tires. Always figured it was just the extra width of the tire causing it to follow imperfections in the road. Seems to be fine with the 245 tires now..

are you running OME springs and a Daystar lift as well or is that OME springs front, Daystar rear?

Not sure what the problem is, I am running265-70s on 8 inch wheels and have nothing like you are talking about???

Does it do it all the time on all types of roads, all speeds, etc ??

Well, first I would check tierods make sure not loose or frozen. Then check upper and lower balljoints for play or noise. you could have a P.S pump with low press. intermittly causing probs!! For the vib. issue if you haven't replaced tires rotate front to back and see if it changes, sounds like a tire/rim issue!! I have seen weird hubs, balljoints, cause some vibe. issue's before!!

Its OME front and daystar rear. Problem persists at all speeds and on all roads. I know that the tires are bad, but that wouldnt make the steering behave THAT bad. I also had them check the balljoints and I was told they were fine.

Bad tires can make it feel that bad,bad tires can also take out a new rack that fast also.Get some known good tires on there and see how it drives.
