Does anyone know if there's any danger in putting a 160amp alternator in the heep? i got one for a good price, and want to run all sorts of goodies...

bigger alt will not help. you want to upgrade your battery instead.

Wait? The bigger alternator will not help? How so?

The alternator provides current to recharge the battery. If the renegade models came with a 160 amp alternator and the sport/limited units came with a 132 amp alternator than there is a benefit. The OEM made that statement.

it will help, but only if you have a higher demand on the electrical system causing the 132amp alternator from keeping the battery fully charged at running conditions (14.4v). i tested the my alt. (132a) and it was putting out 142amps at 2000rpms at full load.

EDIT: but yes a better battery could help also, i switched to a optima yellow top and it helped a bit.

Whether or not a better battery will help depends on what hes wanting to accomplish. If he is wanting to run 10 100watt lights while having the heated seats in, rear defrost, front defrost(A/C is on), fan on high, fog lights on, etc, then a bigger alt would be best. :)

If you have the regular 132amp alternator and then add a 160amp one you will not see any gain. Why? Well the alternator on the KJ is totally controlled by the PCM and is programmed with the fact it came with a 132amp alternator. You will need to have the PCM reprogrammed to a Renagade to see the benefit of the 160amp alternator.Same goes with the MeanGreen 202amp alternator.

I have the 132amp alternator, the renny lightbar,2 more accessory lights,a 750watt amp,and a WARN XP9500 winch and have never had any issues.I also upgraded to the Optima YellowTop battery. No dimming of the lights at night when cranking my stereo 8) .

Under the Back seat is a decent spot but not on the floor, I removed my back seats, and put 2 Kicker 300.2 Amps under there. I did have dimming issues, Until I got Capacitors.

ditch that cap, it's practically useless and if anything it's hurting your system. do the big 3 upgrade (if you don't know what that is, google it there's a bunch of results). the big 3 upgrade will upgrade your electrical ~30% and is well worth it.

i'm pushing a 2000 watt amp at 1 ohm and my voltage doesn't drop below 12.4... when idling i'm at about 14.3
