Post subject:  Tractor Supply - Recovery Gear Low $$
Rolled by Tractor Supply (don't know if this store is country wide) and found more than anticipated. Was just looking for a good 3/8" chain and walked out with the following:

3/8" 16' grade 70 galvanized chain with clevis hooks $33
6' Tree saver strap rated 10K lb $16
All cast (the good one) 48" HiLift Jack $44

They also had plenty of recovery straps (already have one) in monster sizes I would not even imagine existed. So, including my existing tow strap and two 3/4" shackles I have myself a 5K lb rated hand winch for about $150. That's a lot of different self recovery options for the money.

I hope to god you're not planning on recovering anything with that chain. get a good tow strap...$20ish, no hooks.

That's exactly what I am planning. The chain allows you to position and tension the jack before winching. Not much use without it. Grade 70 is DOT rated as "Transport Chain" at about 8K lbs working load.

I think he meant using the chain as a snatch, dont do that! You would get a MUCH more peak load than 8K snatching a good stuck.

m0lson, where is this place located? I need to get some straps for my KJ along with tree savers and maby 2-3 shackles. Is there one closer to Richmond than Arlington?

Tow straps and recovery straps are quite different. Not sure of the exact engineering terminology but tow straps (like the chain) are made for a static load while recovery are made to be loaded dynamically through strectching and provide extra pulling through the stored up kinetic energy (yanking). Either way, I think we are all pretty much talking the same thing here.

Chain vs. straps; straps get freyed easily and also breakdown realitively quickly as dirt gets in the weave and breaks down their strength through abrasion. Also, chains can easily be sized for a pull on a tight trail by using the clevis hooks and shackles. But as Thunderbird is implying don't yank them or you will quickly find out the meaning of "ballistic" :shock:

I got my shackles through etrialer.com; tractor supply only had 1/2" at the one I was at. You want 3/4" bowed, self locking

Also try http://www.mcmaster.com; if they don't have it... it probably doesn't exist!
