Easy way to change rear diff oil!

Ok, i posted this on Aus Jeep Off Road forum a while ago. Basically, if you want an easier way to drop your rear diff oil, than undoing the rear housing on the diff, getting oil going everywhere, redoing the selastic gasket, and basically being a PITA, then this is what i do:
Get an 18" length of garden hose (1/2") drill the same size hole in the lid of a plastic Coke bottle (600ml one, don't know fluid onces(?)), Squeeze fit the hose into the lid (needs to be airtight). Insert other end into the diff as shown, making sure the end is at the lowest point in the diff (as shown).
Squeeze the bottle and physics takes over and sucks the oil out!, Do that 3-4 times, you will get 1.8 litres of oil (3 bottles full).

OK, now when every one comments that they like to have a look in the diff and clean the sludge and bits of metal out, thats OK!, this is when you have been crossing rivers on the weekend and just want to change the oil just to be safe, or just because you want to, doing it this quick (takes 15 minutes tops) will mean you will do it more often, i bet. anyway, surprised this hasn't been submitted before(?)

Can fill the diff same way as well.

Gotta say thats an awesome cheap idea. Even if you were taking the cover off you could do that before to keep it cleaner when the cover falls off and oil goes everywhere. :shock:

I started using an extra facet lift pump I had laying around to pump it into the used oil container. Of course a new one of those is 35 bucks.

When you are sayin you can fill it the same way, do you mean by using the same hose? I aint catchin on here, I see that the vacuum works to get the oil out (impressive), but how are you meaning that it works the same way to replace the fluid?

I am gonna wait to change my fluid until I buy my detroit locker, but if that don't work out soon enough, this post will come in handy.

When i say you can fill it the same way, i mean you fill the bottle with oil, and then squeeze it into the diff.

Not really the same there i suppose! :oops:

It can be difficult sometimes to put oil in, especially if you don't have the bottles with a tube already attached.

I've never changed diff oil before because this is my first vehicle needing it but now that I see how easy it is I think I'll do it this weekend.
Does it have to be a Sprite bottle or will Coke be ok? hahaha

BTW What's the name of that mountain again in your avatar? It's been bugging me for about 3 weeks.

Yes it is really easy, and you don't have to re do the gasket, which though not difficult, is time consuming and means you keep putting it off :oops:

The mountain is actually a rock, (the worlds largest!), Ayres Rock, or Uluru is the Aboriginal name.

There's a magnet in the bottom of the diff housing you might want to clean at each change. Only accessible with the cover off though.

Remember if you have the 8.25 corprate rear end,
you'll need to replace the oil with 75/145 synthetic
and add the friction modifier additive or you'll
be sorry..... :wink:

The friction modifier is ONLY if you have a limited slip differential...not the basic open gearing...or an ARB locker

I did that once but with a regular syphon ball and tube on an old truck I had once. I like the way you did it with a soda bottle.

Normally I do take the cover off like you said though. That would be great for every other change I think.

Gotta agree with Joe on this one. Get a Lube Locker permanent gasket and pull the cover every time. It only takes a few minutes and you can see everything in the case (good or bad).

Yeah, if you cracked the cover last week, went wheelin' in water this week, why would you need to crack the cover next week, when you just have to drain the oil as NTJEEP has done.

i do this before i take the cover off just to help with the mess. it takes a little longer this way but not as much cleaning in the end
