When the people on this forum talk about extending their breathers,what is that and how do you go about doing it?What does it benefit? |

Extending your breater tubes on your front diff., rear diff, transmission, transfercase, will benifit when crossing deep water !! I personally replaced both axle vent tubes and ran the front up to the top of fire wall. The rear axle vent I ran a new hose to the gas cap lid and both trany and trasfercase I extended to the top of the trany dipstick tube. I like water, and I have been in 3+ feet before, it's cheap insurance !!!

its a tube that releives pressure from the parts mentioned above, if you get water into any of those parts it dilutes your lubricants and starts burning up gears and such. cheap insurance is right |

yeah i just changed both diffs and they were full of water i was just wondering how you do or if there is a guide on this forum? |

It's not difficult, Im thinking I bought 8 feet of 3/8 fuel line some small clamps and removed the old vent tube on the diff's. You will need to remove carfully the plastic vent caps at the end of the old tube to reinstall in the new longer tube. When routing the new vent hose make sure you keep the hose away from heat, moving part's and not to pinch it off. Run the new vent hose as high as you can! I use zip ties to hold in place and attach to lines or bracket as Im routing the new vent hose to the fire wall. For the rear diff. zip tie the hose as you are running it up the fuel inlet pipe behined the rear fender well. Leave a little slack in the hose for flexing of the rear diff. and for the front you don't want to pinch or wear the hose from being stretched to tight ! Towstrap and I went to the badland's a couple month's ago and was running our KJ's through lage ponds and running the creek's, when we got to check his front diff that next weekend it was fullllllll of water!!  We flushed it, we caught it in time and didn't damage the bearings. His front hose was cracked and let water in, thats when I decided to extend all of his and my vent tubes .

AAGHH!! That's just another thing that I have never heard of!! And I have been out muddin a couple times. by krikey !!! I think I am gonna have to look into these breather tubes

There are actually 6 breathers (on the 2005 CRD at least) - front diff, rear diff, transfer case, transmission, and 2 fuel breathers - 1 is about half way up the tank and is a fair size, and there is one on top of the tank which is a bit difficult to get to! |

When I checked the breather hose on my front differential a year back, it was cracked right at the differential cover (factory hose). It wasn't protecting the differential at all So at least visiually check yours.

Don't forget, those with a MANUAL transmission will only have three...F/R diffs and the transfer case. I ran mine to a modified lawnmower filter attached near the brake resivoir. Pics in my mods thread. John ];') |

My breathers are in the stock positions but I will check them. Good thread/reminder to check something I forgot about. I havn't checked mine since the jeep was new. Thanks. This place is great. |

I have not heard this come up before...But - I have not looked into it either. I'll have to give it a good look. Would it will be up under the gas tank skid and difficult to get at? i think that's just a diesel piece, i did not see any breathers when I replaced my fuel filter last week |

It's actually on the top of the tank - certainly on mine. There is the main tank breather, and then this little one tucked right up on top! It is not easy to see - I wouldn't have been aware of it if one of the guys on Ausjeep hadn't pointed it out. |
