wondering what the procedure is for taking the roof side rails off?? one of mine is starting to show some wear and im thinking of painting them. im assuming the other pieces are bolted through the roof and the head liner would need to come out

very easy to do 5 minute job
open up the front door and you will see where the two pieces of plastic bracket come togethere gently pry between the two kind of forward and out and it comes apart then you will see the two bolts, rear the same way

You only have to open the doors to get access to the outer parts. There is nothing to do inside the vehicle.

When you pry the outer half of the plastic away from the inner half, be very careful with your prying. It is easy to ding up the plastic just by inserting your screwdriver, and you can also crack/break parts of it. I used a very thin screw driver in cunjunction with a thicker one, to kind of work my way up the seam. If it feels like its too hard to pry open, start from a different spot.

I believe you can buy cans of DIY bedliner type material, and I think I saw some at Wal-Mart. I can't attest to their quality. Inc did his rack (and roof) with "plastikote", you may ask him about it. I hope he doesn't mind me linking his pictures...

Pics of his roof:

any of that stuff you have to checkout and see what type of UV protection it has if any, some does not and will over time turn greyish almost white as it fades.

Everyone will recommend a different product, just do like tom said and look into which one you think is best. Here's the website of the stuff I used, it's epoxy base is supposed to let it be more flexible than other liners.

4 cross rails welded on my stock Renny side rails. Works awesome.

The Plastikote I have used on various parts of my jeep is over a year old and hasn't faded yet. It might, but no signs of it yet. Good stuff.
