I broke reverse gear.

I am not exactly sure how I did it but my transmission will not recognize it is in reverse. Today I was trying to back up a slight incline and I didn't realize I wasn't totally in R. I was revved at about 3K when I popped my trans into reverse and gave it a bit more gas by mistake. Well, I hit the rev limiter, some smoke came out of my tranny and and now when I shift into reverse I get nothing. I can rev the engine but nothing happens. My forward gears are fine. What the heck.

Any ideas??
If I toasted the entire tranny then:
Can I get a 45RFE or 545RFE and put that in as a direct swap.
Can I get a 42rle from a Wrangler or another Mopar vehicle that uses it.
If not must it be the 2006 42RLE.

I am getting rid of this POS Liberty. ASAP. In the last month I lost a regulator, a radiator, and a transmission. WTF, OVER!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure about the replacements and I understand your frustration, but you can't blame the trans problem on the Libby. That one is all on you.

I believe (5)45RFE transmissions can be bolted in place. A different cross member will be needed and but the computer won't know how to control it though. An external transmission controller might get it to work. This swap would be very experimental though.

According to www.car-part.com 42RLE trans from 2005 and 2006 will work in your Jeep, but you will need to know if you have a 3 or 4 wire connector.

you can pick up trannys fairly cheap ( used low mileage ones) and I agree with the above, can't blame the tranny or the Liberty for this one entirely! Feel your frustration , but......

Gota agree with the others. Tranny problem was kinda your fault. :cry:

I have replaced my wifes Tranny and transfer case. Trans started slipping and the transfer case fell apart and jammed. Lib would not go forward or backward.

Was like I had the brakes on. Fixed it for $4500 and done. Was that or burn it. But it was too close to the house. :roll:

I know it is my fault but darn, it seems like the tranny should be able to withstand something like that a time or two without breaking.

Tranny shop is thinking I toasted the reverse clutches. They recommend a rebuild and a TransGo shift kit for $2500 total. They claim that the transmission will be stronger than it was stock. Are there parts available that will facilitate this??

If that includes labor and everything then thats decent.. Ive always heard that rebuilt trannys are never as good as stock though.. Guess it depends on the shop. If they recommended a shift kit from transgo they must know something since thats the only company that makes a shift kit for the 42rle.

Not sure if it will be any better than stock unless they put a better torque in it.

If you where stock it would hold up a few times but having bigger and stickier tires it will not since the traction your tires provided was to great to overcome.

The shift kit for the 42RLE will not make it stronger by any means,just shift better.There's not much(if any) HD aftermarket trans parts for the 42RLE either so they pretty much where blowing smoke up your ___.

The only thing shift kits do is put more pressure on the clutches for more grip on those clutches and more + shifts. It will not make your trans any more stronger.

Screw it then. I will just get a used one. Where is the connector so I can figure out if I have a 3 or a 4 wire trans.

Can't help here. I've only breifly looked at 42RLEs, Eugene has the 45RFE.

I think the easiest way is to count the number of trans pan bolts... 13 is the RFE I believe.

Already been established which trans he has, now he needs to know how many connectors on the wiring harness.

Well since it is a 2006 gasser it must be a TH400 right.

I went down to get a build sheet at the local Ford Lincoln Mercury Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealer and they said "We cant give you that" What the fork?? Morons. when I asked if they could tell me which trany I had they said "Oh it's a VLP" I almost choked him

After poking and prodding I was able to get this number 4800426AA. Research says it is a 4 wire.

I was only $1684 after tax for Auburn Car Repair and Off-Road in Auburn, WA to fix it. Got a low mile used trans with a 1 year 15K mile warranty too. The rebuild would have been about $1k more and have the same warranty.

3000 RPM's and dropping right into reverse with more gas??? :shock:

the real question is why not why not? when you are parked and idling at under 1000 RPM's during a normal shift into reverse. you are now throwing 3x the force into those gears. you are just asking for trouble in the long run. Heck, I hardly ever see 3000 rpms except maybe on the highway during a downshift uphill while passing and that's not in reverse. to each his own I guess.
