Post subject:  Skid plates
I just spoke with the stealership to order some skid plates and they told me I need just 2 plates. One for the engine and one for the transmission and transfer case. Is this all I need or are there three plates?

There are 4 MOPAR ones I beleive... And usually everyone will tell you to get them all, cause you never know what you might be up against. So I'm just going to fork over the ~$300 or so for the ones from JParts. They're the cheapest place, as far as I know.

Many don't think a fuel tank skid is important so they forget to count it. It becomes real important once you get stranded and you have to clean up 20+ gallons of fuel on the trail.

I had MOPAR skids for a while and recently changed them out to Skid row after a rock when through the tranny skid like tissue paper.

Thats what I thought as well, I talked to 2 stealerships and they said the same thing that there were only 2 plates and the gas tank skid is not in production anymore.

Get a Kilby Fuel Skid:

As for the others, use a combination of OEM and Skid Row...

Especially when your tank is plastic like the KJ! :shock:

I second the Kilby gas tank skid. Skidrow for everything else.

Found a skid row plate for the engine transmission running for about 250 at jeepin by als. One site I went on for the Kilby skid said they were discontinuing that model for the fuel tank.

Keep in mind that engine transmissions skid is actually just a transmission skid. I guess in the fact that the transmission is connected to the engine makes it an engine transmission but the skid doesn't cover the engine.

The front skid is not a engine skid,it is the front diff skid since the oil pan is plenty protected by the engine cradle in the area the front skid covers.The transmission skid will protect the back half of the engine oil pan also.

anyone know the weight of the Mopar gas tank skid? I know the Kilby is about 75lbs. I'm still trying to figure out which one to get.

The MOPAR gas tank skid is maybe 15lbs,it's looks to be only 14gauge steel.

holy crap! Really? Is there really that much of a difference? Wow! What's the general thought of the Mopar gas tank? in the North East more of the rocks I'll deal with are a bit rounded out so I'm not worried about sharp rocks but can it handle hard impacts or will I have a 20 gal tank become a 10 gal tank?

I've landed hard, scraped , dropped and crunched on my Mopar gas skid. It has a dent on the driver rear corner where the hole is. The skid work well. There are better ones out there, but the Mopar one isn't crap.

I was thinking more of the skid getting dented in and doing the same to the gas tank – not actually leaking fuel but just allowing for less volume inside the tank. The same thing happened to a friends rig. He couldn’t figure out why he was only able to put 10 gals or so into the tank.

Good to know it works, still not sure which one I’ll get.

They do. I came down HARD on mine at Tellico in Oct '07 (dropped off a 3 foot ledge!!!). Without it I would have been toast!!!! I have the Rusty's which is actually TOO heavy (one of the reasons why I have always assumed that I have not gotten as much lift out of my OME HD lift as others is that I have a LOT of weight under my KJ between the all the skids, rock rails, and front & rear receiver hitch!!! LOL), so if you can find a Kilby or a Skid Row I would suggest going with one of them...

Going to go with a skid row Engine/transmission skid plate and the front skid plate, with the skid row fuel tank skid plate. I emailed jeepin by al and they said with that skid plate I wouldn't need a transfer skid.
