Will my red top optima suffice to run my new Ramsey REP 9000, or do I need to upgrade to a yellow top? Obviously, money saved is money spent somewhere else, so if the Red Top will handle it... I'd like to use it for now.

The Red Top can run the winch, the life will be shortened some since the Red Top was not ment for extended high amp draws that a winch requires.Do not use the side post to hook the winch up,always use the top posts for the winch.

Good advice, I figure I'll use the red top until it dies, then replace with a yellow top.

The side post are smaller and can't handle the amp draw of a winch. And when a bought my yellow top the paperwork that came with it said not to.

Might sound a bit odd, but a couple of guys on Ausjeep fitted Blue Tops (Marine)and liked them. Also use the main post for the winch! Apparently the one with the Light grey body is the one to go for.

ARB reccomended the blue top for single battery vehicles. I was told that the blue has a lower internal resistance, which allows the vehicle to recharge at a faster rate while winching (High drain load). Only 50CCA less than the yellow, but yellow has a longer, slower recharge rate.

I've got the blue-top and I'm in Australia.

All the Optima's are glass mat(AGM) technology but the different colors(Red,Yellow, and Blue) are made a bit differently for specific applications.

Red Top--starting,basic replacement
Yellow Top--Winching,big stereos, and lots of lights(higher comeback from discharges the a RedTop)
Blue Top--Marine/racing use where no alternators are used, ment for high/fast discharges without harming the battery

So does that mean that a blue top would be better than the yellow?

i have a red top.... a winch, and big stereo and it's been perfect so far... i keep my RPM's at 1500ish when winching.. dont know if this helps at all but i think it may. i would've gotten a blue top.. but my red top was free so i'm not complaining :)
