Uneven Tire Wear

Post subject:  Uneven Tire Wear
There is major uneven tire wear on the inside of my front drivers side tire. It looks like 'camber' wear. What do you think has caused this?

can camber be set on our vehicles? Or is some suspension component out of whack?

I know how you feel and everyone tells me i am a freak because I get my alignment and balancing checked every 3,000 miles, But believe me I don't want to have those bad problems with tire wear!!!

Thanks. I'm just a little concerned since I am about to go on a 800 mile road trip. I rotated the tires tonight and rotated the spare on and the uneven tire onto the spare. But I don't want that the new tire to wear too. I'm hoping an alignment will fix it. I did have it aligned after fixing my lift (about 9 mo ago) but not after putting on new tires last January.

It's possible you could have a ball joint out or wheel bearings or steering rack or maybe just out of alignment. Go have it checked.

What tire company offers replacement if a tire is worn due to a mechanical issue and not a fault of the tire itself??
Thats like asking for new brake pads cuz you wore them out yourself.

Really... I have only spent $12.95 x 4 = $51.80 for a rotate and balance for the life of the tire, and $59.99 for an alignment which they honor for 12months or 12,000 miles which ever comes first, and considering I get 4 alignments for free during those 12 months (alignment every 3,000 miles) I am actually saving $180 or getting 3 free alignments.
So yeah I spent around $100 and only spend the $59.99 every 12,000 but man it is soooooo worth it!

Thats a pretty good deal. I couldn't find anyone in town to do the "lifetime alignments" I keep hearing about on here. My tire place charges $45 each time and recommends I do it twice a year. They say because our Muncie streets suck, which they do. I get free balance and rotation from them for the life of my tires because I bought them from them. I still do my own rotations though, when I change the oil every 3k. I just get them balanced when I think it needs it.

Well, when you put it that way.
I've heard of lifetime alignments..but they've never caught on over here.

Anything is possible but my a-arms are only 9 months old and they don't look bad. My lower ball joints were replaced about 1.5 years ago. So you wouldn't think that would be it.

Took the jeep to the dealer and they told me my ubj's are shot so they can not do the alignment. Do you think they could be BSing me? My ubj's (al's 4.5) are only a year old. Or do you think it could be damaged from a bad alignment? They said the ubj have lateral movement.

Those UBJ's probably have only 6000 miles on them. I only drive it on the weekend. I'm wondering if my alignment got thrown off when I put the arb bumper and winch on. Perhaps it settled and changed the angles?

Besides the ubjs, they also said I have a leaking CV and need new wheel bearing and a tie rod. Then they charged me $70 to say they can not do anything until these are fixed. Yeah right. :x

I'll have a look at it tonight to see if the shop is right. It looks like jba has some good prices on tie rod parts and replacement ubjs. So if need be I will just replace those parts. The other stuff can wait since it doesn't need to be done for an alignment.

CVs don't leak. Either the boot tears and all the grease comes out, or it doesn't. No leaking scenario there unless he just explained it wrong and you have a torn CV boot. If the boot is torn DO NOT DRIVE IT MUCH IF AT ALL until you get it fixed!! A bad axle bearing might leak if that is what he meant. The tie rod end should be greaseable and unless the rubber boot on that is torn it's probably ok. Just crawl under it and look.

The left tie rod end it said on the work order it is out of tolerances (ball joint movement?). I still have to go pick up the jeep but I will look at it later.

stock tie rod ends are not greaseable
How often did you grease the UBJs?
