Today I picked up a set of Hella 500 driving lamps for 55 bucks at work and was wondering a few things: I know the new renegades come with the lights mounted on the front bumper, so this should be perfectly legal in PA w/o having them covered. Also one of the commercial accounts at work said he would put them on for 35 bucks. Im just a bit paranoid of drilling into the bumper (does the bumper need to come off) and the instructions are kind of vague. I have installed countless headunits and am pretty comfortable w/ wiring. And finally which wire going into our dual filiment headlamps it the high beam......I guess what I really need is someone to say its not that hard, stop thinking about it and do it!

OK - its not that hard, stop thinking about it and do it! If the wiring is constant for all years then the high-beam wire should be light green with a brown stripe. I will check my install tomorrow to find out for sure what wire I tapped. As for drilling thru the bumper, it is very easy and the plastic doesn't have to come off; in fact, drilling thru the plastic first then the metal helps to hold the drill bit in place. I would suggest painting the metal once drilled and maybe using some silicone sealer under the mounting brackets to help keep moisture out. Before you drill you might check with a dealer to see if there might be mount points already under the bumper for the factory lights (I'm guessing they drill the bumper to install the lights).

[For PA drivers] Just make sure they are 20" apart (center of one light to the center of the other) if you want to leave them uncovered. I have the ARB Bullbar and they are about 19.5" but I still don't use the covers. I don't think anyone would challenge me with a tape measure. What year is your KJ? Mine is a 2002. I had to drill into the bumper and did not take it off. I just took some work with a long socket extension. Also, I wired my Hella 500's independent of the high/low beams. Although it is illegal in PA, I wanted to be able to use my fog lights and high beams at night on some of the back roads around here.

If you have any problems, contact Hella by email. They have a decent support center. They sent me some additional instructions--which I lost along with a hard drive two years ago. They also sent me two free fog lamps due to my negligence in putting the covers on while the lights were hot and cracking the glass. That really impressed me.
