I was told {on another forum} that driving a Liberty without the front CV's in would result in the front hub falling off. They stated that the wheel bearing is held in place by the axle nut. Is this true? Isn't it a common practice to pull the CV out when you break the CV or the DIff? I've done it myself and driven 200-300 miles with it out and never saw an issue and I thought TJKJ did it for months while compiling the pieces for his SFA. Of course, the assumption is that it creates the possibility for it to happen, not that it happens immediately. We know that isn't true already. |

A 2wd KJ and a 4wd KJ use the exact same front hub bearings. |

Ok, but is the system that holds them in place the same? I wouldn't think the 2wd would have a hole for the CV shaft (obviously). I personally think it is OK without the axle (I've done it myself). I would just like one of you guys with more knowledge of the design to verify that the hub is no more likely to fall off on a 4wd w/out cv's than it is on a 2wd. One of the guys stated that he had exactly that happen on his Wrangler (and it is someone I find very credible). Is the Wrangler set up different? Or was it just severe wear, which could also happen on a 2wd? |

Again a 2wd KJ uses the exact same front hub bearings as a 4wd KJ,so yes the exact same 3 bolts hold both in place and the CV running through the 4wd ones does nothing for keeping the hub bearing in place or intact.A Wrangler is a whole different story and should not be the basis on what you can and can't do on a KJ.

Thats like comparing apples to oranges, it will work on a KJ for sure seen it done with NO problems |

Yep, you can take out both CVs and the front driveshaft and happily wheel around in a front-heavy 2WD Liberty. Being able to do that helps when your front DS goes 'phbbtttt' or the front D30a diff grenades

We had no front diff, at all in are liberty for almost 4 months when the front end blew up on us. It held up fine. |

i also wondered this.. glad you brought it up. Also what is a good way to plug the front diff without the CV's being in there? i imagine it would fill with dirt other wise |

Ive drove mine whithout the driveshaft, CV joint, diff and kardan (axle between transf.case and diff). This way...

For pluging the hole, Troy usually says stuff rags in it. I would be concerned with moisture soaking through and getting in if you are in a wet environment. I thought about seeing if a boat plug would fit. The kind that you tighten down and it expands to make a seal... Just a thought. Also, kind of off topic, but worth mentioning... There is supposed to be an O-ring between the CV hub on the passenger's side and the stub shaft (kardan?) inside the axle tube. I only mention this because mine didn't have it! The first time I pulled that axle it was fused to the stub shaft so badly that it had to be driven off the shaft. It took the end of the splines off with it and I had to replace the shaft and the CV. When I put it back together, the new one had the O-ring. As extra insurance, I put a cheap autozone "diff" axle seal on the shaft. This seal is supposed to be the driver's side axle seal. It's a very poor attempt at one though. It is basically a small seal that slides over the axle shaft. It doesn't mount to the housing in any way (like the factory one). I just went and got a factory one for that. But it makes a good seal against the CV on the passenger's side. Cheap insurance to back-up the O-ring. |

A rag works fine... No need to worry about water etc.... Stuff it, and cap it off with some duct tape.... I ran mine like that for ????? a while... |
