Hey everyone, recently i have been trying to persuade my dad, with no luck, into letting me install a lift (the Liberty is still technicaly his even tho i drive it every day, take care of it with most of my money, work on it and he has his own car), but he is very against having a lift installed. He says he dosent want an off road veichle, THEN WHYD HE BUY A JEEP?!?' I love my jeep but feel like the only non lifted Liberty on this site.:( I have revos and am installing skids soon but all i need now is a LIFT!! Anyone out there have any good arguments in favor of the lift? Either that or i can take over the $400+ payments a month :?, which ill prob do if i get a scholarship to college for next year..

the trick is to pay for the Jeep yourself, pay for your own rent, utilities, and food. Then your parents can't stop you. I bought my Jeep the day after I graduated high school... So I have had it for 7 months. I just got my lift kit a month ago. As a 19 year old guy in nearly the same shoes (dad that buys trucks for towing no 4x4ing), I can honestly tell you there is no way you will convince your parents. You are not the only one without a lift. In fact most people aren't aware lifts are made for these. I own the only lifted Liberty in my home town and probably all of Washington County, MN. I am sure there are many more like me who own one of a kind in their town.

Hey,
I had the same issue at first. But just remember as long as you have full skids, light off-roading is possible. As per convincing him.....Try telling him all about how into your car you are and that you want ot do the work on it. and that it's a hobby of yours and you want to take it to the next level and get into it. But also remind them that your studies come first.
You see that is there real concern, that it will get in the way of your education. As long as you make them aware that you know that it is one of there concerns. Then they know that you have thought about all the options that come with getting into this hobby. Show that you are responsible and that you know taht school comes first. That's what I did when I was in college.
Good Luck, Tell me how it goes.

Copy that! I bought the Jeep, and a nice little car for my wife, pay all the bills, and the mortgage. And she still won't let me get diff-locks and 4.1 gears!

She says I have to buy stuff like nappies for the baby and food. Pffft!

Man!! I must have the best wife ever.. She is talking about lifting the Libby, ARB bumper, winch, AT tires, lockers, etc.. :D
The only thing we agreed upon was to keep it stock for a year.. Which is fine with me...

RipTide7, consider yourself fortunate. I have paid for every vehicle I ever owned without any help from anyone.

Try to look at the positive side: How many people your age even have a Jeep? It is easy to look at the ones who have fancier stuff than you do but if you will look around you will see that most kids don't have what you have.

One of the first things I learned in life is that he who pays the fiddler calls the tune. When you start paying for your own vehicle (and insurance, gas, etc.) you can do whatever you want. Until then work on being grateful you have a Dad who bought you a vehicle.

Riptide7 I forgot to mention I live in an area where lots of kids had their vehicles bought (rich side of the tracks). I wasn't that fortunate so I paid for mine. Take over the payments ASAP. I put a nice stereo, billet grille, lots of chrome, nice rims (18's),dual exhaust with glass packs and neons on my last truck. That was the one I owned in high school. My buddy had a ZJ and would always ask how I convinced my dad to let me do this to the truck. I'd pull out the title and show to everyone whose name was on it (mine of course). You could try a compromise, first tell your dad that you are ditching the Navy to join the Army (kidding but I had to throw that in there, Hooah). Forget your dad's Liberty. Ask your dad to cosign with you on a used KJ, use arguements like helps build credit fast, lower payments, need a decent reliable vehicle to get to and from school. I used all of these except for the school part, I just basically promised I would move out and be an "adult" (don't tell anyone I said that). Then lift away!!! :D

Words of wisdom Bill. Be happy you don't drive a POS clunker like many kids get for their first car. I would have loved a New stock Jeep for my first vehicle and having someone else pay for it would have been pretty darn sweet too. Funny thing is, I Really wish I still had that first clunker car of mine. Respect your dads wishes and enjoy what you have. In time you will be able to get what you want with your own hard earned money.

BTW, my sons will both be "helped" with buying their first vehicles. They are both saving their money and I have told them I would match what they save up toward a car. So far both of them want Jeeps. (COOL)
My oldest, 15 in Feb. wants a Cherokee, so we will be shopping for one w/in the next year or so. I hope he has enough saved up to afford a decent vehicle. I know one thing, He Will be driving it stock for at least the first year or so. He Has to learn to wheel a stocker so he can learn finesse, picking easy lines, etc. Then maybe the lift, lockers and such will come. If they can afford them of course.

Sorry for the long read....

hi, If I were You, i would take your Dad off roading on a mild trail and go nice and slow over the bumps and hills to show him that you care about the vehicle and that you won't hack on it. Maybe he will get the itch and would want to help mod out the KJ as well.just a thought..

I think I need to get an H3 now seeing that highschool kids can afford the jeep I'm driving.. Am i a Loser??haha

I'd say stick with the 'someone else is making the payments plan' for as long as possible. Even if you do get the scholarship, congratz on that by the way well done, your still going to be missing that 400 a month no matter what your college budget is.

I hate to be the one preaching responsibility but if you can minimize your debt load now, then future you will be thanking current you.

AMEN! You have plenty of time for this hobby. Let them make those payments. You'll be making em for the rst of your life, why start before you have to?

I second this post. I'm basically in the same boat as you, my dad's helping pay etc, and once he saw how much I loved wheeling the Liberty, he (somewhat reluctantly at first) allowed me to add some stuff, like new tires and a new skid. I would say worry about the armor first, because IMO it's gonna do you more good than a lift, as it will keep you from messing anything up. That's just my 2 cents

Show him that a 2.5" lift really doesn't make it look like some OFF ROAD VEHICLE and its still easy to get in and all that. There are loads of pictures on here. Thats a really strange argument though...."I don't want an off road vehicle....lets go get a Jeep" you see, when you buy a Jeep....you plant a seed in those around you....they dream of adventure and going places others can't go....thats the Jeep mystery....to go places "mapquest" doesn't.....good luck bro!

Thanks for all the advice. As for being fortunte, i know that, i thank my dad every day for the jeep, even the days we "debate" on installing a lift. I couldnt want another veichle more and realize how awesome it is to have a Liberty for my age, only problem is i have a sister in college to so its shared amoung us when shes home. Luckily it dosent take too much persuadeing for her to take the acura when its available.

Hey, if it is your dads Jeep then I think it is perfectly okay for him to say what can be done with the Jeep. You taking care of it with your own money to me is just your payment for him letting you drive it.

Solution
Buy an old used Jeep or keep sitting pretty in that shiny new one. Sure beats the heck out of my roofless 78 Toyota pickup that I clunked around in.
