Yeah its normal....from my experiences....in the manual you will find a section on appplying the 4HI and 4LO....it says you should be applying the 4X4 while in motion....I like to put it in Neutral first but I'm still moving.....4HI shouldn't be applied any faster than a bit below highway speeds and 4LO no faster than what you would do on a long residential driveway or school yard.

However that being said....I have had no problem applying either while sitting still....I always put it in Neutral first then make the change and put it back in a drive gear.

Try doing it while moving....if you still have a problem contact DC.

Hope this helps....read your manual....it may be more specific. Good luck and welcome to owning a KJ!!

No offense intended.... but read your manual. You're supposed to engage the 4WD while you're moving... less than 55 mph.

Now... 4WD LOW is different... get the vehicle moving between 3 and 5 mph, put it in neutral (while it's still rolling), quickly switch it into 4WD LOW, and then put the vehicle back into drive. No problem. Use the exact same procedure in reverse to get it out of 4LO.

This is pretty much true of all four wheel drives, notice how people in 4x4 magazines and TV say "put the vehicle in four wheel drive before getting stuck"? This is how most people get stuck and I have yet to see a vehicle where 4x4 can be engage while stopped. The gears need movement to mesh.
