Post subject:  Thumping Noise: UPDATE on orignal post

I just had the front drive shaft replaced and now I have a deep sounding thumping noise that wasn't there before. I put it in 4WD and there isn't any change from 2WD. It starts at about 40mph and doesn't seem to increase with speed. As I said it is a deep sounding noise, like a base note.

I'll be gone until Monday, celebrating our 16th. anniversary, so I won't be able to take it back right away. Any ideas anyone?

Terry

UPDATE: I took the KJ to a garage to have Al's A-Arms put on & new brakes. The drivers side arm hits the spring. It's on a lift when it hit & no tire on it. If you rotate the axle while it was up in the air it's very hard to turn and there is that thumping noise.

BTW: they measure both of the Al's arms and they are NOT the same. I emailed him about it. Right now the shop is going to put my old arms back on. Then I can check out the problem with the arms. Also I will be able to have that axle checked out.

What is going on with these 2 problems?

there a vibration with it? or just the noise, floorboard etc?

on a joke note, perhaps you should remove the dead cat that crawled up in there

Hmmm, a dead cat, maybe! There isn't any vibration. The thumping isn't loud at all and I can't feel it either.

well they don't just thump for no reason

doesn't increase with speed, deep...

like how fast is this bumping ? like a double time maybe a little faster?

i had a crew cab chevy truck that would put itself almost into 4wd that would do that when the speed/vibration/etc of the driveline components got fast enough, something or other would sit there and shake back and forth making a bumping noise, passenger could feel it in the floorboard, i couldn't

try engaging the 4wd and then disengaging it again, wrangler reverse roll back style ya know

maybe they bumped some linkage or something

Seems like quite a few intermediate shaft have been dieing recently.... I don't know what the symptoms are when they go out/start to go out

If the CV/intermediate shaft get real bad there will be a thumping sound, at least Chris' was by the time we changed it out.

Mine only had three or four splines worn and it made the same thumping Terry's talking about.

BOTH of my Al's arms hit the spring when on a lift. I also hear them touch the spring on hard bumps from time to time, its something I didnt have an issue with until I put the al's arms on.

As for the thumping, I have that too, I thought it was a wheel bearing at first, and replaced one, it seemed to go away but came back again. Ive been trying to track it down, with no luck. I havent pulled the front driveshaft yet but its next on the list.

I'm curious about this thread. I've developed a very faint rattle sound over the last month. It's barely noticable, but I've heard it a few times. I'm thinking it's drivetrain related because I couldn't hear it with it in park, even while revving the engine. This may give me something to look at.

Take it out and beat on it for a little while. that seems to cure most of my problems. It either loosens up or breaks. I call it STUMPJUMPER Diagnostics

If you cut the UCA pockets for the UCA's you might want to read the thread in the link below.

Dude...... the arms are not supposed to be the same length? That's jacked-up.

All I know is that they measured the 2 arms and said that they were not the same. I'll pick up the KJ Sunday and measure them myself.

What version of Arms do you have? I have the 3.5's and I notice that my driverside arm also hits my coils.
