Post subject:  Front Hub and Bearing

I've got some whining going on up front at certain speeds that I think is the front hub and bearing. Pricing out the parts on moparpartsamerica.com I notice the right assembly is $214 and the left is $130. The right is also listed as 05-07 while the left is 05-06.

Is there any difference between the right and left assemblies?
Are there any gotchas I should be aware of before undertaking this?
Is there anything in addition to the hub assembly that I should do at the same time?

Thanks in advance for all your help. I appreciate it.

JBA has both left and right listed for 195 each, http://jeepinbyal.com/cat-Front_Drive_A ... ts-21.aspx

so it would be my guess that the 130 you're seeing is the wrong part

Have you checked RockAuto for them? they usually have several options of prices

Out of curiousity, what are the symptoms. I have a VERY slight whine along with a noticeable wobble coming from the front between 25 and 35 mph, but it's relatively smooth otherwise. I was thinking possibly bent/badly seated bearing. What exactly is yours doing?

Mine is making kind of a resonating/humming sound. It's most noticeable around 40 mph, but can be heard anywhere above about 10 mph. It's been going on for a while now and getting louder I think. At first I thought maybe warped rotors because I was starting to get some pulsating in the brakes. I changed them and have smooth brakes now, but the sound remains. I'll rotate tires this weekend and see if that has any affect too.

The easiest way to test for a bad unit bearing is the any movement when shaken at the 12/6 o'clock position. If there is no play that does not mean they are good, the next step is to use stethoscope.Place the end near the unit bearing and spin the wheel, you will know if that bearing is bad or not.

just out of curiosity, does anyone know what type of socket you need for the bolts that hold the hub on? when i was working on the jeep last week i noticed that they are some sort of reversed t-star head but the sockets i had didn't fit.

the next question is should the bolts be replaced?? if so, is the dealer the only option? when changing out the wheel bearing on my wife's grand prix, it said you need to replace the bolts with new ones. funny thing is they didn't come with the bearing :banghead:

It's a E12 or E14,get a good set(not the cheap set for $20 either) since those suckers can be in there awful tight.

You know of anyone who stocks those funky sockets? Carquest? Napa?

I would like to bring this topic back to the forefront since I think I need to replace my right front wheel bearing on my 06 Jeep CRD. I have spent a lot of time looking for pricing, socket size, and torque spec. without too much luck. The best price I have found is $215 for the right hand side (with ABS) at Advance Auto.
If someone has this info handy I would greatly appreciate your posting it.
Thanks

WoW that's a scary story  , I hope nobody was seriously hurt.

I usually check my bearings by grabbing the tire while the vehicle is on the lift but I like the idea of the stethoscope. Maybe I can use a big screwdriver against my ear. Works for noise valve lifters.

No one was hurt luckily. I stopped about 2 feet short of the oncoming lane, and the 18 wheeler that was in it. The part that upset me the most is that 3 weeks earlier the truck passed a state inspection where i asked for the front end be checked very closely. I asked for the front end to be looked over cause i have had a steady rotation of new ball joints and wheel bearing every 2 years, but i usually have 12 to 15k in that time not 3k.

Post subject:  Re: Front Hub and Bearing

So per recommendations from others in the forum I found and replaced my driver side wheel bearing, TimKin brand for $200. :)
Here are a few notes I thought might help others.

Front hub and wheel bearings:
Wheel bearing cartridges are sealed assemblies that can not be lubricated.
They should have almost zero play.
With the front wheel still jacked up by the control arm, grasp each wheel, holding it first at the sides, then at the top and bottom. See if you can rock the wheel in and out, you shouldn't notice any looseness.
Also rotate the tire by hand. Any roughness or noise from the bearings will also tell you the bearings are worn or damaged.
If the bearing needs to be replaced, the right hand side (with ABS) part number is 52128692AE (or AA or AF). The left is 52128693AE (or AA or AF).

You need an External TORX socket size E-14 to do it.
