Post subject:  Recovery Question

Where is it best to fasten a tow strap to the KJ when recovering a vehicle? I have a hitch and grill guard, so no tow hooks are available. Should shackles be used in the tow strap loops?

I have one of these, but I don't think I paid that much for it.

Pin it in your hitch reciever and put the recover strap loop in the bow shackle and you're good to go. I've been drug out by it and had no problems. Really embarrasing....I wandered into a trap I shouldn't have gone near, slipped into the ruts and came down on my front skid and rear axle, so completely high centered all I could do was sling snow and mud in the air with my tires. Got yanked out about 15 ft, occasionally getting traction. No damage to my rig.

Where's the best place to hook when u don't have tow hooks up front??

Post subject:  Unfortunately,

Unfortunately you really need a front hitch or hooks. Most of the times you will not be able to get that far under the jeep to get an A-arm to hook because it will be buried in mud, sand or snow and you take a risk of cutting a good strap or tearing up your bumper.

A lower A-arm would work in a pinch (if you can get to it). Keep in mind that if you use anything other than a tow hook or hitch you stand a good chance of damaging your Jeep.

could the front skid plate be used, i have a hitch so its not a big deal for me but my bud kinda wondered if thatd work, dont think ill ever consider trying because if i could reach that i could reach a lower A-arm

If ive already got the shackle, where could i get one of those hitch things. Some people use a regular receiver but it looks stupid turned sideways. Why the heck would i ever pay $65 for one of those? If all else fails ill just put the loop through the pin that holds a receiver in the hitch?!?!?

$65 is definitely pricey. However, you can pick up a receiver shackle for half that at many spots.

Irunmiles, I strongly suggest never using that Westin brush guard as a recovery attach point, unless you want it to point forward. It'll bend before your Jeep move an inch (even if the Jeep isn't stuck). Go for the A-arm if you can reach it.

The Westin brush guards look great, but if you plan on doing a lot of off-roading, swap it out for tow hooks or a front receiver (or an ARB bullbar 8) ).

I searched around for a reciever shackle forever. The cheapest one I found was $25. But check out this hook, I got it for $15!!!! At a flea market, so in my opinion screw the D-Ring. And the hook has a 10,000lb to rating.
