This past weekend I went to the beach and thought i'd see how my new tires did in the soft sand down here. THEY DID GREAT!! Almost too good, i couldn't seem to get myself stuck in 2WD.....finally i did get stuck. But when i tried to shift into 4 Wheel Part Time, i couldnt not engage. So i put it in Reverse and then shifted back into Drive and as i was moving forward i shifted into 4 Wheel part time like i normally do with no problem. Now i'm guessing that in order to shift into that 4 Wheel part time i ahve to be moving?....or maybe i needed to put the tranny into Neutral, and then shift into 4 part time????

And i guess i could have put it into Neutral and shifted into 4LO? But how could i do that if it wouldn't let me go through 4Hi? And do I have to be in 4Hi first in order to shift into 4LO?

Start in Neutral to shift into either 4lo or 4hi or shift on fly into 4hi. At least that works for me.

The neutral part is only when shifting into or out of 4lo. FL Renny-you are on the right track. Once you are stuck (and most folks here will agree with me), it is nearly impossible to shift into 4Hi. You paid for 4 wheel drive, USE IT!!!! Put it in 4Hi before you get stuck and you will stay out of trouble a lot longer. Since you wheel on the beach (i am assuming loose sand) I suggest getting a pair of sand ladders and a shovel to do self recovery. Sand ladders make a huge difference.

a sand ladder is a device the looks like a ladder, basically it is something to put under the tires to give you traction in sand. It is a universal deal and if you have a welder you can them yourself fairly cheap. If you do a google on it you will find them for sale (fairly spendy though). You see them more on land rovers and such.

The transfer case is just gears meshing, so yeah... if you're not moving, and the gears aren't lined up, you might have a hard time engaging it.

For 4Lo, is there a limit to how fast you can go with 4Lo engaged? I know that for 4wd Full Time its around 50mph.

You should be moving at 2-3 miles per hour to engage 4 lo. Any faster and you could damage the t-case.

You can shift into 4 part time or full time at any speed up to 50 mph.

DO NOT shift into ANY 4 wheel drive position on the t-case if you are stuck and your tires are spinning! If you do this you could shear the teeth off some gears or damage the chain in the t-case.

what steps are you doing?

I go from 4full, slow down to a coast 1-3 mph put trans into N then move shifter a little left or Right(can't remember which, but it is on the handle) and down into 4lo. Mine is sometimes hard to shift.

hope this helps.

What tried to do many times was i'd coast below around 2-3 mph and then i'd shift it into 4wd Fulltime and from there i pulled up more andthen i tried to push the shifterto the right or left like the diagram showed and i could never get the shifter to pull up into the 4Lo position. Then again i was in drive while trying to do this.

So what i should do i have it in 4wd Full Time and then coast to 2-3 mph and put the tranny into neutral, then shift into 4Lo, then back shiftback into drive from neutral...right>

Yup you got it. One thing the manual says is to pull right thru neutral on the T-case. If it sits in neutral, you may need to go back into 4 hi again. I get it in 4-hi, then going a couple mph, I drop the tranny into neutral, then firmly move the t-case lever to the right and back into lo.
