Post subject:  Clunking noise when backing...

On most (not 100%) of mornings when I have to back out of my parking spot, I hear a weird clunking noise coming from the rear end. I have an '05 CRD 4x4. The noise isn't very loud and almost sounds like a binding. I have no clue what it could be.

Thanks in advance,
-Barry-

change the rear end oil. I went beyond the service on my 2004 liberty and got that clunking noise. I think the change was supposed to be 12000. The oil weight was lighter than my front so I put the heavier in the back too. Depending on the type of 4 wheel drive you have, you might have to put the additive in too.

I have the same problem....only about once or twice a week. I'm not quite ready for a service yet but I'm planning on taking it in early to get the oil changed and to check out that reverse clunk. It only happens in the morning. I've also got an 05 CRD. Let me know what you find out....Wes

how cold is it when you get the noise? Mine does it when it is 30 degrees (F) out. What type of 4 wheel drive you have has nothing to do with additives in the rear-end, you only put that if you have a limited slip diff in the back. Check your owners manual as some axles require different weight oil in different climates. If it were backlash you would get the sound every time you back up, it is still possible that it is off though. Rare to see that it is off from the factory though (did you install a locker or LSD or have a shop do it or any work on the rear end?). If it is cold out when this happens, that isn't anything to worry about. If there is a possibility that it is the front end, you may have a bad CV joint developing.

Thanks for the replies. The CRD has 9,500 miles on it, so I wouldn't think it'd be due for a diff service. I'll change it around 12-15k.

Are you parked on perfectly level surface??

Backlash, won't occur every time...too many variables.

Less than one degree of incline.

don't know if this would happen with the CRD, but I often get the exhaust rattling on the gas tank skid when reversing under only idle power. 3.7L + 5-spd manual.

jacobi

I have the same problem here in france with my 05 CRD (create on march) bougth it on september.
Jeep / Chrysler apparently work on it (answer of my dealer)

Because they change oil and so on and the noise is still there.

But they find that if you not use the hand break tne noise dissapear a lot, not all but the clunk is less.

Try it. For me its fine, its better, the noise is still there but really less

I've used my hand brake, maybe, five times....that's probably not it.

Thanks though.
