Post subject:  ****UPDATE**** Unknown Sound Coming from Driveshaft

(**Sorry about the generic language... I am not mechancally sound and up to date on the language. I will try to explain it as best as i can)

I drive a 2003 KJ Sport, Manual transmission. On my way home from work last night i noticed a sound coing from underneath the KJ. it seems to go faster with the MPH in which i am driving. the sound in which it was making was a rubbing and squealling sound. i assume that if it is making a sound it is a metal to metal contact. correct?

Anyway when i was near my house, on a back road, i wanted to try to isolate the area in which it was coming from. i went down to about 5mph, opened my door and listened. the sound did happen, very slowly. i do believe that the sound is something to do with the driveshaft, maybe. (i am probably wrong with my assumption. lol.)

anyway, i stopped the jeep and crawled under the bodyi twisted the front driveshaft a quarter turn and the sound came from the area in which it goes into the transfer case. almost right where the rubber boot is that conncts to the frontside of the transfer case. (would this be a lubrication issue? or grease? etc.?)

My question for all of you KJ experts is with the information, does anyone have a suggestion as to what it is? i have heard of U-joints causing that problem. i do not have any vibration and as of now the jeep still drives good..... just really annoying with the higher MPH's as you can imagine.

Any insight on this problem would be greatly appriciated. and again i am sorry for the no mechanical terms.

Thanks alot everyone.

Josh

hey josh im just 16 so dont take this info to seriously but depending on the sound it could just be were the drive shaft spins and needs lube, like wat you said. I have the same jeep as you stick and all but if i were you i would probley take your jeep to the shop to have them look at it. But sence it get worse as you go faster i am sure that it would have to be a lube problem of a faulty u-joint sorry about your troubles when you find out for sure i would really like it if you told me in case this ever happens to me haha.

I am having the identical provlem as well. Last week replaced both u-joints.. didnt solve sheat. I'll be in the shop today at 4:00 with a mechanic trying to figure out what the exact reasoning is. IF i find out anything worth posting I'll leave it here.

Mine has been like this for the past two months... you should hear the ruckus it makes in 4Hi... it's a symphony of crunchy, P.O.S. goodness. In drive its so loud i can't hear my engine. EFFIN Ay

if it makes that noise is louder in 4hi then it has to be the transfer case I think ?

Post subject:  ****UPDATE*** Unknown Sound Coming from Either Driveshaft

today i took out the driveshaft.... and as most of you wear saying the drive shaft is inface bad.

the boot that is near the transfer case was ripped opened and i am in fact missing 2 bearings that are inside of it.

my question is now where can i buy a replacement. and what specs do i need. i went online to napa and the price was either$409.00
or $464.00.

i do not know the shaft length that i need to purchase. NAPA's choices are 16 1/2", 19", and 20"

which one should i get?

also, i heard someone mention Tom Wood's driveshafts.

i went on that website and again i do not know what to look for. any help would be so greatful

thanks everyone for putting up with me . lol

I too did the exact same, only the rear end of the shaft was chipped/cracked where it inserts into the boot. I just took it off and left it off for now. (obviously best thing for now.)BEST NEWS. the sounds gone. If you google FRONT DRIVESHAFT then your year and make, you should be able to find refurbished ones for around 209-300.

best i have found. (have done any extensive searching)

I would not recommend a tom woods to anyone that does not want alot of maintenance. I have to pull mine out every 6k and grease the double cardon because there is no way to do it with it in the jeep. If you don't keep up on it you will have problems

There should be a label on the driveshaft with the part number on it. Wherever you get your replacement shaft should be able to use this number to tell which shaft you need. I replaced mine with an OEM shaft from a discount MOPAR dealer online. From everything I have read you are better off with a new OEM driveshaft.
