LOL...... Last night I had one of our techs put fresh fluids in my diffs and t-case. While he was working on that I walked under the Jeep and grabbed my rear driveshaft to check for play. I seem to rememeber reading here that it's normal for the front shaft to have some play but the rear should not (LOL). I was able to turn the rear about a 1/4" turn. I don't know if it make a difference that all four tires were off the ground as opposed to on. I don't remember that there was any play when I checked on-ground. When I expressed concern about the play to the tech he told me that was perfectly normal and started talking to me about chains and stuff in the t-case that make it impossible to have zero play. I am pretty sure it's not supposed to and it never had it before but I only ever checked it on the ground (if that makes a difference). Am I in trouble with the amout of play I see? If it's bad, what is it an indicator of? I go down to MOAB today so I am wondering if I should stick to the bunny trails or not. Thanks peeps. |

For the rear drive shaft it is completely gear to gear, there is no chain that affects it. There is a good chance that having the rear end off the ground will affect the amount of play that you are feeling. I would check it again on the ground in park. Mine has about 1/8th turn. |

I just ran out to the parking lot and checked and it's nice and tight (like how I remembered) so it must've been cause the tires were off the ground. |

Let me know if a problem shows up... I have a spare rear DS and U joints I can bring to Moab. |

Normal, more so when you get up in the miles. After you have about 1/2 turn of play and that noticeable "clunk" when you put it in gear or from "R" to "D" then it's time to check the ring gear lash. |
