Hey guys, i have an 02 libby limited, dark garnet red metallic, auto 4x4, the usual stuff. Yesterday it started with a rod knock, only has 122k miles too. I'm contemplating selling it. Its in pretty good shape. Not a show car but deffinately nothing to shake a stick at.

Any idea how much i should ask for it? i was thinking 3g's??

LOL... selling the KJ because a rod started knocking... that's a good reason people shouldn't by used, especially from a private party.

With that said, give Kelly Blue Book a try and don't forget to check the "poor condition" button.
Just did a quick check for my area... it was a little over $5k in "fair condition". So, if you let it go for $3k AND let the person know about the mechanical condition, $3k sounds fair.

being honest with you here:

if i was lookin at an 02, and it was clean, no body damage, everything still intact, had atleast an engine skid, no moderate damage to the rims, and everything worked, lighting wise, electronic wise, all door speakers still there things like that and didn't show any signs of abuse or in otherwords didn't look like it had been hacked up, and they told me a rod was knocking

I'd probably agree to 3-4k if they had maintained the transmission and maybe had a tranny service receipt sometime after 75k

kind of look at it like, how much does the person buying have to invest to correct the mechanical issue

and 3-4k investment will get you a new engine, making the overall about 6500-7k and with the 45RFE, it would probably be good to go to 300,000

With a known engine problem I'd say 1k at most.Looking at $4000 for a remaned engine and another $1000 in maintenance stuff on top of that for the buyer and you can get good condition '02's here for about $4k-$5k with 120k-150k on them.

Change the plugs, add a jug of 104+ octane booster,40 weight oil and the V-8 sized can of Restore, and you should get 7 grand easy.

What does that mean? im being honest here and stating that the rod is knocking. lol i wouldnt sell a vehicle stating it is perfect when the motors about to blow up...

Im just trying to find a fair asking price to count my loses, and provide a deal to someone who has a means of fixing the motor. It doesnt need a full fledged reman engine, just someone with some time and tools. Its most likely a journal bearing which if your knowledgable enough, you can fix without an ENTIRE motor swap. Also, i can get a motor with low miles from a scrap yard here in NJ for about $500. If i had a means of swapping the motor, i would eat the money and do it. Since i live in a Condo, i cant exactally do it in the parking lot :)

Thank you for all the helpful responses, i am an honest guy just trying to get by like everyone else here!

take care!

I would think there might be a few people on here willing to help donate some time and work on a fellow LOST KJ. I have the same one as you and no noises...yet, lol. I do burn some oil though but I write that off as a Jeep. My wife and I talk about selling it once in awhile but the alternative is a JK or some other wrangler. I get vetoed each time I bring it up, lol. I have not done a engine swap on a KJ yet but I can not imagine it would be too hard....is it?

doesn't really look too hard, prob the hardest bolts to get to will be the bell housing. Just need a place to work, id have it pull and swapped in 2 days. It just really bites this had to happen right now. Its been my mothers daily driver, used to be mine but her zj had to go under the knife for a big maint job. So basically i had to drop a bunch of money into the ZJ really fast just to get her up and running. Man this is a tough spot to be in...

So heres my options...

Sell it and hope to get $2-3g's

Find the exact root cause and fix it. I highly think its the journal bearings, any help here would be really appreciated

Buy a used motor for about $500 and swap it in if i can find a spot to do this work.

Buy a reman motor for $3-4g's and swap it if i can find a spot to do the work.

Part it out.

I dont think any of these options will be easy, just need some time to think i guess...

Thanks again for the help/info guys!

Any tips on swapping the motor ie: where to start, things to look out for, etc? I've done swaps before, but never on a newer chrysler...

Ask you local dealer. You might be surprised. Most dealers have quoted me $2,000 (labor) for an engine swap.

Don't drink any beer. Get only one other person to help you hopefully someone with a good memory and pay attention taking it apart. I have recently done a few honda civics and man the wiring harness is bad on those is hard to deal with. I've looked at the KJ it looks fairly easy to deal with.

yeah I don't think the wiring harness would be that hard. get some masking tape and a sharpie to mark the connectors you take off, (injector #, MAP, MAF, coil #, etc.)

it'll add more time to the removal, but greatly speed up and simplify the install. and minimize frustration if you can't remember what something is or get simmilar connections switched or something.

other than the extra wiring, it shouldn't be much different than an older vehicle engine swap.
