So I was playing around the garage yesterday and I found a Cold Air Intake style cone filter from a previous vehicle that I had removed. I decided to throw it on the jeep because on previous vehicles this gave me a bit more throttle response and just sounded cool Anyway after the the install, just removed the old housing and clamped it to the hose, I took it for a test drive on the highway and it ran HORRIBLE!!! It had little or no throttle response and I would have to bury it to go around people. When I got home I put the old housing and filter back on and it ran like a top!! Has anyone else experienced this? I always thought these intakes were supposed to help throttle response not hinder it!!

I have had 4 different setups on mine including a cone type for several thousand miles, BEST system to date is a 3 inch hose from grill back to stock airbox and Amsoil filter!
Cones just suck in a lot of hot air!

I had one on my Astro van and it actually helped some in seat of the pants hp and ran smoother, but it seems consensus for the Libbys, hurts more than it helps.

so glad i didnt invest any money into a "cold air" intake. when i swapped out the old air filter with a new regular paper fram one after a few days of driving, it was literally night and day difference.

$12 vs like $250. i was sold to the lowest bidder.

K&N "Cold" air intake.

If you ever notice, the big names like k & n usually have a heat shield around them to not just get more air but colder too. The stock airbox has that small snorkel-like intake on the front which allows your engine to pull cold fresh air from the front of the vehicle. Keep in mind that colder air has more molecules per square inch than hot air. Therefore, with colder air, the computer can apply more fuel which equals more power. Alot of people put the cone filters on and remove the airbox and all it's doing is feeding your engine hot air.

Wow I never thought of it that way! Thanks JustinP, I figured that since the engine was getting more air than used to the Mass Air Flow was having trouble with the Fuel/Air mixture.

Basically, there’s more oxygen in cold air. The density of air varies with temperature. Colder air weighs more. And given the pressure and volume of cold air, more weight means more oxygen.
