I had a VAG-COM for my VW golf... it was awesome. Told me everything right there on my laptop.

Does anyone use a scan tool for the newer jeeps? The kind which plug into the OBD-II port and can tell you everything from throttle position to what sensor is throwing the code? The Aktron style scan tools are too vague IMHOP.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I'm sitting on 125K miles on my liberty and the diagnostic alarms are starting to roll in...

I believe the tool you are looking for is the StarSCAN tool but be prepared to shell out some serious coin for one. They are available on EBay for ~$3000 and brand new for about $4000.

I was reading on another forum about a small group of people working to reverse engineer the tool so that it could be used on a laptop and such but still had not completed the project as of yet. There was an attempt several years ago that was shut down by DCX as the project neared completion. The new project is still in the works as far as I can tell.

I use a ScanGaugeII on all of our OBD-II vehicles.

US OBD-II is supposed to be standardized. Makes me wonder how much of the VAG-COM would work with other makes.

Donkeykong,
I think what you're looking for is the ELM Scan 5.

http://www.scantool.net/scan-tools/elmscan-5-usb.html

It's just an OBD II scan tool that's PC based.
