Post subject:  Wheel chirp!?

For the past couple weeks now in the moring and when I leave work there is a chirp, chirp, chirp coming from the drivers side from wheel. My thinking is this means new wheel hub cause the bearing is going out, or someone is leaving parachetes on chasis somewhere. I am going home tonight and giving the wheel a good wiggle to see if it moves from the 12 and 6 position, but thought maybe someone could shed some more light on this for me. The chirps only happen after it sits or is cold and only maybe three of four chips from loud to soft.

thanks

could be a rock stuck somewhere...

could be a hub...

could be a CV...

could be a belt in the engine compartment...

could be many things.

not belt chirp checked
CV'c look good, boots look alright

I know its wheel based cause as i drive faster the chirps speed up, does not chirp when I idle of rev engine so not pulley or belt based

still think it may be birds on the chasis.....

Sure its from the front?
Could be rear U joints
if not I'd go with CVs
or brake sticking some

Alright what or how to I check the rear u joints
Best way to check CV's

the sticking brake I am pretty sure I can figure that one out...

Tom you have dashed all hopes of it being a shadowy figure placing birds on my jeep.....

eyeball the seals on the rear ujoints, if they look melted and crumbling it's time to replace, and/or if you drive it around awhile and stop and stick your finger on the ujoint and lose your finger print, time to change them and put on some burn cream

Sounds like the brake warning squealer, but they usually don't go away. Try hitting brakes to see if it stops. If it's not that, then I would say bearing, goes away once it gets warm maybe???

Post subject:  Re: Wheel chirp!?

Yes Tahoe! Since it has warmed up the sound is not as pronouced and dies away quicker.

Post subject:  Re: Wheel chirp!?

It could still be either problem. My U-joints, when they were going out, only chirped in reverse. I thought it was the brakes at first too because the sound went away. With the window down, it sounded like it was coming from the driver's side front (like you). I had Dad stand outside the vehicle when I recreated the "moment." The sound was actually coming from underneath the vehicle. My U-joints went out under warranty and have not been replaced since (75k miles ago). I also had a small vibration at speed that could have been written off to tires (though it wasn't really the same type of vibration). Replacing the U-joints fixed my problem. This does not rule out the brakes, though, IMO.

update: I checked the Ujoints and...... the rear shaft from transfercase goes CV Ujoint Ujoint. Checked both Ujoints and this is what I found.

1st Ujoint
grease on all four joints could not see the rubber seals (is that bad)

2nd Ujoint
no grease onthe outside seals are hard

As I drove around pretending to be Ace Ventura I did realize as Boilermaker stated that the sound is coming from more underneath the jeep. I think I will just replace both cause the joints really aren't that much. And since I just started moonlighting at a parts store they should be even more reasonable!!!!

Now the question is how hard are these to replace. Have repair manual but some pointers would be nice

I guess the first question that needs to be asked in terms of the ujoints is whether the 2006 is one of the libertys with perma-press ujoints?

Post subject:  Re: Wheel chirp!?

As far as I know, the permi press crap didn't start till the KA and KK came off of the line...

Ok, i hate to hijack, but i have to know, what is a permi press u joint?? Im assuming its similiar to the early 2000's GMs with the plastic retainers on the u joint that had to be heated up before pressed out.

Yes must be more or less melted out, hate them things!

yode
yours should not be too bad. rusted I am sure but not bad. Mine had a fine powder in them when I swapped them out and almost rusted solid. Drive for two miles and the joint would burn your fingers!
Wait no now going back a few years I mean the joint burnt my fingers err U-joint did
