 Post subject: 5.0 small block in my 2007 KJ 4x4

will it fit??? im sure it will, i dont think any one has tried it yet. I just worried about the tranny matching up with the transfer case. Any ideas?

depends which tranny you end up using

becomes more of an electronics issue getting everything all working together

It will fit, I measured :wink:

1st you will need to pull every single computer out of the KJ and throw into the trash,you will lose all safety functions(ESP,ABS,and airbags).Then hardwire all accessories like the radio,power windows,and so on and so on.Get a stand alone PCM to run the FI for the 302.You will need to run a Ford trans as a C4 or C6(both no overdrive) or build a AOD(massively) for OD.The t-case will need to be swapped out also as the KJ's 231 or 242 will not mate to a Ford trans and that also means new F/R driveshafts. And not to forget all the custom stuff like motor mounts and trans/t-case mounts needed and linkages needed to shift said trans and t-case and exhaust.


Pending the outcome of my Father a warm 347 stroker will be going in my KJ or a 4.7 late next year.

pretty sure novak has an adapter for 302 to 45RFE

it's a real good time to upgrade and change all sorts of beasts

save an electronic component and go stick is an option, again check novak for adapters or again swap TC's

i know **** about ford trannys/tc's

hopefully i'll follow troys ford build thread and learn a lil somethin :P

No adapter for the 302 to 45RFE trans,looked and even on Novak's website,no adapter for the 302 to 42RLE either.The 42RLE would last about 10seconds behind a mild 302.

Looked a painless wiring also but I plan on keeping most of the OEM wiring and fuse blocks,juts no computers.The OEM dash will be gone also,replaced with a custom one with more gauges then you could imagine.

Now if the V8 swap ends up being the 4.7 I will have zero involvement in that build(except paying the bill) as it will look 100% stock with all electronics working and in place,it will be dropped off at Burnsville Offroad for the 4.7 swap if it happens to go that way.

i thought i had saw one on novak, but it's not real fresh in my mind either so could have been somewhere, or something else entirely but anyway

at the same time, the cash flow involved in a sfa, or a v8 swap and the time invested, it's worth doin it right, doin the homework and turnin out somethin totally stoked

i've got several motors in various stages of build, but i never fully make up my mind until the absolute need arises, i probably won't dive a v8 in mine until i need to and when i do i'll probably pull the auto too

i hate electronics but they do wonders

only took me about 2 good days to shove a 302HO in a mid-late 80s? ford ranger, then a 6 day wait for an adapter, driveshaft pretzels, mmmm wish it was /that/ easy with the KJ's but then again, the kj versus that ranger.. that ranger was a piece of **** lol

still gonna run a slushbox with your 8 banger troy? can't really say i blame ya, depending on what ya end up using tc/tran wise there's always final OD adapters, i ran a Dana20 OD adapter quite a bit and never had a problem with it but i wasn't pushin much over 375hp on that truck which i'd guess is probably less than what you're going to build :P

2 pedals is enough to deal with on the trail.Plus a auto can be made to be far stronger then any manual trans.Then the torque multiplication the torque converter gives is far better then any low range in any manual trans.Less likely to break parts also since the TC will absorb most of the driveline shock that a clutch will only transmit to the driveline and BAM you got broken parts.

Color me silly, but this seems like an incredible amount of work for a unibody 4x4. On top of all the electrical and driveline upgrades, you'll probably have to reinforce the entire rig with a custom subframe. Not saying this is bad, but essentially you're building a full on custom rock crawler wearing Liberty make-up.

Have you considered a super-charger, and strengthening the drive-line to handle the extra umph?

I'm just thinking out loud for you.

Frame stiffeners? yep I have them.

Beefed up drivetrain? yep got that covered also with a HP44(alloy axles and CTM's) up front and RockJock60(alloy 35 spline axles) in the rear and being supplied power via a AtlasII t-case.Oh and 1350 u-jointed F/R High Angle Driveline driveshafts.


Forget the supercharger,no one makes one for the 3.7 and it will just blow the engine anyway due to the piston ring locations,not worth adding forged pistons to handle the boost.

Plus the KJ's uniframe is leaps and bounds stronger(something like 200%-300% stronger) then the XJ's or a unibody SUV.


And yes there is a difference between a uniframe and a unibody.
