Anyone using a reuseable stainless steel mesh type oil filter, like the Ultrafilter, in place of the standard paper spin on? Or does anyone have experience with this type of filter? Pros / Cons?

Well, Volkswagen did it for years and years, but there are some problems with them.

A filter needs to capture and retain even the smallest debris from the oil stream. For a steel mesh type filter to do this, the mesh must be very very tight. Unfortunately, the tighter the mesh becomes, the more impossible it becomes to completely clean the thing of everything that it has trapped. So manufacturers of these end up having to make a trade-off. They end up having to let a little more particulate matter through in exchange for being able to actually clean and reuse the filter. They ALL claim they filter as well as a paper element, but it simply is not true.

IMHO, just stick with spending 5-6 bucks at each oil change and have piece of mind and a little more time on your hands to use for Jeeping.

How often do you think a paper filter has the bypass valve open allowing oil to pass unfiltered? I know you want to get as small a particle as possible stopped in the filter while still alowing adequate oil flow to the engine and in doing so, doesn't a paper filter have a good potential to be in the bypass mode more often then we would like to admit? The mesh type filters I've looked at so far have no bypass valves so they filter their stated micron rating 100% of the time. Overall, wouldn't this be better? There is also a range of particle size that does the most damage in an engine, this I have to look more into to make sure the mesh type filters can keep from circulating in the oil. I like the idea of being able to clean out the filter myself and see what is circulating around in my engine.

Keep the paper filter, and get a filter mag: http://www.filtermag.com/

Does anyone run a bypass filter in concert with the full flow filter? I haven't seen any threads on this site mentioning experience with bypass filtration. Especially the diesel owners, other sites like The Turbo Diesel Register had that information going around all the time. I figure if it is good for a Cummins engine, it would also be good for the Liberty engines. It would be great to remove 1-20 micron sized wear particles from the oil. Anyone with bypass filter experience?
